The 2018 Major Leage Baseball Thread

But why would you??? You're shooting yourself in the foot

I already have the money and I have broken no law. The team, on the other hand, would face a lot of problems and penalties. I can always walk away a rich man, and I would invite the team to continue to rent my silence.

But how would the league (or the team) ever find out if all the money was under the table??

Sorry guys, I know this is not the right thread, but I'm hysterically upset neither Holland nor Italy have qualified for the 2018 World Cup. This is beyond comprehension!!

Carry on......

They are lucky not to have to embarrass themselves by participating in the autocrat's propaganda show.

The Dutch and the Italians would get kiiled 5-0 by the New Zealanders with their eyes closed.

Thats how bad things are right now :(

EDIT: okay maybe thats a little exaggerated, but you get the general idea

I hate the DH but can you stay in as the DH if you come out as the pitcher?

I don't think so. This is in the DH rule: Once a Designated Hitter assumes a position on defense, such move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for that club for the remainder of the game.

So it sounds like in games Otani pitches in the AL he can't even be the DH.

Anyway IMO him going to the NL makes sense too. Many times in the NL even if the pitcher is pitching well in a CLOSE game for offensive reasons he is pulled later in the game for a pitch-hitter. If Otani is the pitcher and pitching well, there's no need to pull him.

Also he can pitch hit often for other pitchers. And maybe play the field 1-2 times a week.

Can MLB just not do either/or???!! Get with the the American League DH or just eliminate it altogether, but either way make up your f_cking mind already!!!

Cheers!! Bye!!!

Its not even December 1 yet and we're already at 6 pages into this thread.

Seriously guys, when do the winter trades start happening????
I'm pretty drunk right now, so I'm pretty clueless as of right now
(stop making fun of me ye c_nts!!)

Yes, he can enter MLB as a free agent then. Now, it’s international money, which is variable between teams, with some (like the Cubs) that can only pay him the MŁB minimum.

You are correct on him waiting 2 years. If he does wait he can sign a big fat FA contract, guaranteed money.

I 'think' if he comes to the MLB NOW he can make the maximum of $3 mil a year. And then he'll have to wait 6 years to become a free agent. Some teams have $3 mil of international money available. Some do not, IIRC the Mets have virtually zip.

Word is he wants to come over here now, he doesn't want to wait 2 years.

I guess the new rules also allow for trading for international dollars, so that a few teams can amass up to about $9-10MM for a bonus.

Shohei Otani is coming to MLB, but probably not to the Cubs - Bleed Cubbie Blue

The link has a list of teams and the money they have.

Wow!!!! Its only aboot December 1st and its already 7 pages into this thread.

You Americans better beware of our Blue Jays. We're not f_cking aroond, eh!!
Be afraid!!! Be very afraid!!!

(I misspelled everything on purpose, eh)

I'm quietly hoping he has some Japanese friends in Toronto and that will somehow sway his........(whatever) :(

I know, its a long shot :peace

But if you were Otani, would you rather play in a world class city like New York or Toronto (or even Boston)??

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman informed reporters Sunday night that Ohtani's representatives have told the team that it will not be invited to meet with the starter/slugger face-to-face. The Yankees have been preparing for months their bid for the services of the 23-year-old with a 100 mph fastball and devastating swing.

Boston Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski also said Sunday that Boston is out of the running.

Cashman said Ohtani seems to be leaning toward West Coast teams in smaller markets.

New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox out of running to sign Shohei Ohtani

Kind of tells me all I need to know about this kid. He's not interested in winning.

Looks like there are a handful of teams in the running for Ohtani.

Mariners, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Rangers and the Cubs.

It’s pretty telling that they are mostly West Coast teams, but apparently the Cubs have been putting a creative full court press on him, keeping the Cubs in the running.

In other news, it looks like Stanton is going to either the Giants or St Louis. I hope it’s to the Giants...

This kid refuses to hear the yankees and red sox pitch. That's disrespectful and silly.

Omg... the padres, mariners and rangers are on top of his list?

I dont know this kid but it sounds like he is more concerned about being the center of attention than winning. Very egocentrical. Very unusual for a player from Japan.

A Japanese player favoring a West Coast team? Not surprising at all.

Seattle is probably a really good fit for him, and they are a pretty good team. That's where Ichiro started, I can see this kid doing the same.

Lol. When was the last time the Mariners made the playoffs. Cano, nelson cruz, hernandez? That would be a good core if this was 2010.

When you have the padres on top of your list, clearly winning isnt a priority. Thats like peyton manning saying the browns, bucs, and lions are on top of his list.

Lol. This is a delusional 23 year old kid.

Actually you are delusional, or a very, VERY uniformed baseball fan.

We could start a new thread on players who a) refused to play for the Yankees and Mets because they didn't want to play in NYC and B) players who DID come to the Yankees and Mets and then flopped because the HATED playing in NYC, and that thread would go on for 10 pages.

For decades NYC has ate up players, or kept them away. Been going on forever.

It has little to nothing to do with the Yankees or Mets. It's got everything to do with NYC, the media, the big market expectations, etc. Some guys thrive in it, some don't. No big deal really.
