Say you were in high school and had the talent/size to be an NFL player and make millions of dollars.

Would you risk your health and play football? Of course, it is not guaranteed just getting a scholarship to play in college but assume you were like a 5 star recruit and already had the size and talent.

I think for most, the answer would be no. The game is too physical and dangerous. Players, after they retire, can barely walk, are committing suicide, suffering from ALS, CTE damage, etc...

Unless you planned on being a kicker or punter, I would say the reward is not worth the risk.

Back when I left HS I would have in a heartbeat.

These days I think it is safer to go in the military. Football is just too brutal.

No, but I sure as **** would love to be LeBron James, Michael Jordan or any one of the three hundred-plus Major League baseball players starting in the Bigs.

Hell yeah I would play. Kicker, that’s where it’s at! Or punter.

I think many go on to college to play. And many kids parents wont LET their kids play even in high school. But for too many AA,s, that’s their ticket out.

Why not just play for one or two years and retire? For the top players, that is a fortune in pay, and even for the lowest paid players, it’s still more than the average person will earn in their lifetime.

The lowest paid players, are not taking in a fortune, far from it !!

Minimum $465,000 for a first year player. Play a couple of years, the minimum salary increases each year, and they have more than the average Joe will have in their retirement account when they retire.

If I were a person of color and had no other options in such a atrociously racist society, I might consider it. But as I have the immunities and privileges that come with white maleness, I wouldn't.

Dang, I’m white and male, and I don’t have any of the privileges you speak of. I got a raw deal.

That is not enough to retire on after 2 years.

The minimum salary on rookie contracts is $456k in the first year, progressing up to $690 in the forth year. Great money compared to most people, but it's a far cry from a fortune. The only chance to see the "big money" is to survive our rookie contract (3-5 years) and hope to play well enough to earn a 2nd contract. With the average NFL career being only around 3 years, the odds are against us.

That said, I would still totally do it!

No, no one is saying retire from working after 2 years (I was talking retire from football), when you’re only in your 20s, but they easily could go work just a regular job for another 20 years, and then easily retire on their NFL earnings, as long as they don’t blow it all.

If I had the opportunity, I would in a heartbeat. I miss playing back in HS, and would have loved to been able to make a career out of it.

Is it dangerous? Of course, but you are well compensated. What point is there to living life always worried about the potential danger? I would rather have a shorter lifespan playing a game I love and the opportunity to travel the world then work 60 hours a week in a cubicle.

Since football is one of my favorite sports that answer is yes every time. My answer would be the same for just every major sport NFL NBA MLB NHL

Not everyone is a big *****. Hell yes I would have played.

Simply untrue

A 2012 study of several thousand NFL retirees, conducted by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, found that the former football players lived significantly longer than race- and age-matched controls. They were much less likely to die from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, accidental falls, or homicides than anybody else.

According to the NIOSH study from 2012, ex-players are much less likely to kill themselves than men of the same race and age.

The truth about Will Smith’s Concussion and Bennet Omalu.

Not to mention, 3 years in the NFL provides you a pension with the NFL. Same goes for coaches as well.

Oh hell yea. Hell I am 40+ I would play TODAY if they would let me, slot receiver or QB even. Hell even a special teams guys. If my boys want to play I have absolutely no problems with it.

For the money they make, they can kick my ass from one of the field to the other all day long if they like....lol.... I played left tackle and nose guard, and offensive guard if they needed me, in high school, but those days are behind me...hehe
