I am geographically tied to the Washington, DC area. I have never become a fan of any other of the Washington area'a professional sports teams except for the Washington Redskins. I am old enough to have been able to attend a few of the Washington Senators games back in the day. I have attended a handful of National's games and enjoy the stadium experience but the game is much too slow for my taste. Also have attended some of the Capital's games and again the in person experience is pleasant, but the sport never got any traction with me. Part of my problem is the robbery that occurs in the stand regarding refreshment and the like. Anyway, back to the football team. I suffered with the city in the early 1970's and got my hopes up with the hiring of George Allen. It wasn't meant to be......aftergGeorge left there was a succession of GA assistants until about 1980 when an obscure assistant of Don Coryell (sp?) was hired. Joe Gibbs lost the first few games of his rookie season and then turned things around for the next few years. Theismann, Riggins, Fun Bunch et al.
I bring all the above up to show some context as to my following opinion. I was against the 'mortgaging' of the future with the unbalanced trade that brought RGIII to DC. RG was impressive, but he was hailed as the savior before the season even started and went on to an impressive year as a rookie. He was awarded the 'rookie of the year' following the 2012 season. As I stated earlier I am a fan and have been for long time. In my opinion Russell Wilson was more deserving of the ROY award. He had been drafted in a later round (4th?) and he was destined to ride the bench behind the 10 million dollar guy who had been Aaron Rodger's back up and performed well during his time filling in for AR. Wilson outplayed 10 million and won the starting job and helped bring the Seahawks to the playoffs that year. RGIII had been handed the keys to the franchise and told to run with it. He did have a good year, but the expectations were enormous. RW slowly played his way into the starting job and because of his path to the job, I thought he was more deserving of the ROY award. If you have read this far thanks!

I don't want o give short shrift to the DC basketball franchise. I was fortunate enough to see (in person) the Washington Bullets run to the championship in the late 1970's over the San Antonio Spurs. Those were great experiences in the old Capital Center. To be fair I was younger and there exist a certain hate involved in those memories....

I understand. I too was for a long time in the DC area, and the Redskins were my only local loyalty until the Nationals won me over. I'd like to second your Russell Wilson thought. I believed, and said at the time, that he was 95% of RG3 and did not require the Redskins to mortgage their future. RW was drafted in the 3rd round, Kirk Cousins in the 4th.

I always thought Joe Gibbs winning 3 SB's with 3 different QB's in what? A 10 years span? Was a pretty impressive feat.
