After defeating in succession, Norway (1-0), Denmark (1-0), Belgium (2-1), Sweden (2-0), England (3-0) and Denmark again the final with 4-2, the Dutch women, in their 4th end tournament ever, have won the European Soccer Championship for women.

The Dutch defeated Norway, the number 11th ranked team in the world, the 9th ranked team in the world Sweden and England the number 5 ranked team in the world. The English had knocked out the number 3 team in the world (France) before falling to the Dutch with 3-0 and in the Final the Netherlands defeated Denmark who knocked out the strongest European women's soccer team out of the tournament (Germany, 2nd in the world ranking).

The Netherlands had the help of tens of thousands of screaming supporters (as the event was held in the Netherlands) but as we all know, they do not stand on the field, that is down to the players.

No soccer violence, no hooligans but pure fun and entertainment.

During the fan walk, fans of both Denmark and the Netherlands brotherly/sisterly walked down to the soccer stadium for the final match of the tournament.

They play a very elegant game that I generally enjoy much better than men's soccer.

Congratulations! A moment's confusion since the England team are also nicknmed "The Lionesses" but what a great demonstration of skill. Once England were knocked out, then the UK switched to cheering for the Dutch. While coverage has been greatly increased for this tournament, it's still not at the wall-to-wall level given to the mesn' game. Yet.

We are also called lionesses, this is the emblem if the Dutch soccer organization KNVB

And this is our royal/national coat of arms

Hence the Lionesses or should I say the Orange Lionesses.

Yup, I remember times when women's football really bored me on account of being so slow, so lacking in athletics and so lacking in skill.

Not the fault of the women at all, far more that of the various football associations and clubs for treating this field in such a negligent way.

Thankfully far more effort (and money) is now being invested both on club and national level in far more countries and the results (not just that of today) are a pleasure to behold.

With today's match having been one of the best I've seen all year, certainly better than many of the men's.

Also great to see that the meanwhile tedious dominance of Germany came to an end.

So, congrats Oranje meisjes, you truly were "op Jacht" (on the hunt).

Indeed it was great advertising for women's soccer. And you are right, seeing the dominance of Germany ended is a good thing. That too makes other countries possible candidates for winning a tournament and that is never a bad thing.

And you are right, the quality of women's soccer is growing year after year.

In the Netherlands women's soccer is the fastest growing team sport among girls and women.

86% of all soccer clubs (amateur soccer clubs) have women and girls teams.

The KNVB (the Dutch soccer sports organization) has more members now than ever in their history. Even before this European Championship in the Netherlands the number of women members of the KNVB has grown to over 153,000 women and girls (almost 2% of all women/girls in the Netherlands play soccer).

Congrats to the Netherlands. I only managed to watch the first half, but that was the best 45 minutes of women's football I think I've ever seen. The Danish women gave it their all, but the tactics and commitment of the Dutch team was outstanding. Miedma and Van Den Donk (?) were the real stars, I thought. Well done!

Good on the Dutch. It's amazing how much home field can be an advantage.

It can be, but historically in women's football it hasn't been. That the first time in 6 UEFA tournaments the home side's won. In the FIFA Women's World Cup the home side has won just once.

Well, the match was close. The winning dutch goal was due to a goalkeeper error, else the dutch had few chances. On top of that the Danes had one shot that went past the post by centimeters. I am proud of the Danish team that did far better than expected, especially by beating the Germans.

This was a great game to watch.
