It would be nice if Kirk Cousins wanted to be one of the great Redskins quarterbacks. Kirk seems to be just interested in the biggest salary.

Kirk might have more completions near the end of games, if he had a softer touch on the pass.

The Offensive Line and the Receives may be giving Kirk statistics that are better than his actual talent.

Many news articles say it is important for the Redskins to keep Kirk Cousins. I am not sure,

Colt McCoy beat Dallas. Salary 3.6 Million.

"There are concerns about McCoy’s durability, along with the talent he would have around him. Cousins benefited from an outstanding supporting cast, although Washington struggled in the red zone nonetheless. McCoy would still have a good offensive line and talented weapons such as Jordan Reed and Jamison Crowder, as well as unproven receiver Josh Doctson. With Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson slated to hit the open market next month, Washington’s QB could be without one or both of the team’s veteran wide receivers from 2016."

Kirk Cousins is as loyal to the Redskins as the NFL system permits him to be. Two record-setting seasons should equal a positive overture from the team. He will win a Super Bowl. I hope it is with the Redskins.

"2000[edit]

The following year in 2000 the Redskins went 8-8, Johnson threw more interceptions than touchdowns, and signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent during the offseason while Jeff George started in Washington for 2001. They immediately regretted this when George had the worst stats in the league and was released for Tony Banks after the second game with a 0-2 start while Johnson again had another great season in Tampa Bay and won a Super Bowl the following year.

" Brad Johnson agreed to a five-year, $28 million contract Monday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jim Harbaugh agreed to a two-year deal with Detroit.

The Bucs outbid the Baltimore Ravens for Johnson, who was the most coveted quarterback on the free-agent market. Tampa Bay general manager Rich McKay confirmed he had struck a deal with the former Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings star.

Also Monday, free agent defensive end Trace Armstrong, a 12-year veteran who has spent the last six years with the Miami Dolphins, signed with the Oakland Raiders, and the New Orleans Saints signed former Redskins wide receiver Albert Connell.

Johnson's deal includes a $6.5 million signing bonus and a base salary of $750,000 next season. Nearly half the contract, including a $3.5 million salary and $2 million roster bonus in 2002, would be paid in the first two years."

The Redskins let Brad Johnson get away in free agency. Brad Johnson went on to win a super bowl, soon thereafter.

There is a history of letting good people go for the Redskins under Snyder.

Trade Options for Redskins on Kirk Cousins

"Multiple reports indicate that the 49ers will hire Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their head coach after Super Bowl LI. The potential hire has led to speculation that Shanahan, who spent two seasons as Cousins’ offensive coordinator in Washington, wants the Redskins quarterback for his new team.

This situation is reminiscent of 1988, when the Redskins traded Jay Schroeder to the Raiders for offensive tackle Jim Lachey.

Schroeder was 22-6 as a Redskins starter after taking over for Joe Theismann, who shattered his leg in 1985. In 1986, Schroeder threw for 4,109 yards with 22 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions. The Redskins went 12-4 before losing in the NFC championship to the Giants, who went on to win the Super Bowl."

IMHO it would be a terrible mistake to trade him and that would discourage other top FA's from coming to Washington as well.

IMHO it would be a terrible mistake to trade him and that would discourage other top FA's from coming to Washington as well.

Here is an in-depth interview on how Scott McCloughan thinks, from last season:

"B/R: You've obviously made a huge decision to keep Kirk Cousins on the franchise tag.

SM: We did the franchise tag, and I know everybody made fun of me, and that's fine. But you know what? The guy won the division. They won nine games. They won four games the year before and turned around and won nine, and he plays all 17 with the playoffs, and we went on the road at the end of the season having to win, and we beat Philly and Dallas, both at their places. You know, the NFC East, I don't care if they're good teams or bad teams, you still don't win on the road. We didn't early in the season, but he kept going and going, and the players rallied around him.

B/R: You also had very little choice. If you don't franchise him, other teams bid. At the same time, it's hard to pay a quarterback the market rate after only one full season. If you give Cousins $55 million or $60 million guaranteed, you get criticized even more.

SM: I told Kirk when he came in—and his wife must have hugged me for 10 minutes because he just went from making $600,000 to $19.9 million—I told him, "You take care of me and this organization, we're going to take care of you. I promise. And we're going to build this roster to where you can be average and still be good. I promise you."

Scot McCloughan Q&A: The Philosophy and Tools of a Successful NFL GM | Bleacher Report

After weeks of speculation and buildup, the Redskins and Kirk Cousins have finally agreed to a deal that will keep the quarterback in Washington, at least for the time being.

The Redskins on Tuesday announced that they have placed the exclusive franchise tag on Cousins, which is essentially a one-year, fully-guaranteed deal.

This is the second straight season that Cousins has been tagged, and the first time in NFL history that a quarterback has been given the franchise tag in consecutive years.

Applying the franchise tag on Cousins also allows the Redskins to continue to work on a long-term deal with the quarterback until a July 15 deadline. Last year, the two parties were unable to negotiate a deal, but there may be more incentive this year considering next year’s franchise tag will be extremely pricy

Redskins GM, Scot McCloughan, has reportedly taken some time off work. Hope things get back on track.

Redskins extend Gruden's Contract, though 2020.

"Going into the fourth year of a five year contract, questions would soon start for Redskins head coach Jay Gruden about his contract situation. Rarely does a coach work in the last year of a deal, though it seems the Redskins have avoided all of that.

CSN confirmed that Washington agreed to a two-year extension for Jay Gruden, marking the first coach in owner Dan Snyder's tenure to reach a contract extension with the club. Redskins officials were not immediately available for comment.

The report was origanlly reported by John Keim of ESPN.

Since a season ending loss to the New York Giants on January 1, the 'Skins have been thrust into turmoil. General manager Scot McCloughan is not with the team at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the future of quarterback Kirk Cousins and the team remains up in the air."

"INDIANAPOLIS — The Washington Redskins agreed late Saturday on a two-year contract extension through the 2020 season with coach Jay Gruden, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced the deal.

Gruden had two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed when he took the job in 2014."

The move keeps the coach under contract through the 2020 season and provides some stability as NFL free agency approaches.

Certainly not a positive development. Fans are in revolt.

"The Washington Redskins fired their general manager on the eve of the free-agency period. Now, they might be considering hiring a television analyst to replace him. Just business as usual near the Beltway.

NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock is on the list of candidates to replace ousted GM Scot McCloughan, who was let go amid a cloud of controversy this week, reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates."

Report: NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock a candidate for Redskins''' vacant GM job

"The Redskins added one of the largest wide receiver threats in the NFL today, signing wide receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr.

The 6-foot-4, 223 pounder originally entered the NFL as a quarterback out of Ohio State, and even threw for nearly 2,000 yards during the 2013 season.

But with the prospects of longevity under center looking bleak, Pryor Sr. decided to transition over to wide receiver in 2015.

Last year, he recorded 77 receptions for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns despite playing with five different quarterbacks"

"Newly signed hard-hitting safety, D.J. Swearinger is excited to head to Washington D.C., to reunite with his former high school teammate. As Greenwood Eagles in 2006, D.J. Swearinger and All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman started together in a defensive backfield that helped the small South Carolina high school win a 13th state title in 2006."

"Pierre Garcon: Officially signs with 49ers

"The 49ers officially inked Garcon to a five-year contract Thursday.Aside from six games missed in his first season with the Redskins in 2012, Garcon has been a modicum of health in his other eight campaigns, missing five contests otherwise and none over the past four years. During that four-year span, he led the NFL in receptions once with 113 in 2013, received between 105 and 181 targets each season,"

"Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, after weeks of talks concerning his next contract, has signed a new multi-year deal with the Buccaneers, the team announced Thursday.

The subject of speculation since the end of the season, Jackson expressed his desire to stay in Washington last month, citing stability with his young family and home as factors that would keep him with the Redskins.

He also expressed the hope to continue building off what the team’s offense had produced the last two seasons, but knew that would be challenging once free agency hit."

DeSean Jackson Signs With The Buccaneers

The loss of GM Scot McCloughlin may not be as big a loss as it might seem. Scot had a way of evaluating intangibles in players, and he probably taught those principles to the scouting core that Bruce Allen had in place, for the Redskins. Maybe like enjoying playing football, enjoying practice. Other motivations to play may not make the best players in todays league.

"The Washington Redskins power structure was dramatically altered -- or at least finalized -- Thursday night. The reality is, the team's setup as it stands now has been in place for a couple of weeks as the drama surrounding general manager Scot McCloughan built, culminating in his firing.

The question now becomes: How will they replace him? It’s not certain they will hire someone as general manager. It could be just another personnel guy, someone to provide input. There have been reports they already had started calling around before McCloughan was absent from the scouting combine. The most likely timetable is to hire someone after the draft.

Only after Washington makes a hire will it be clear how much power that person has over the roster or any personnel decisions -- or if the new hire is just be another set of eyes to evaluate talent and provide input."

Washington Redskins have options for Scot McCloughan's replacement - Washington Redskins Blog- ESPN

One conflict between Allen and Scot was the emphasis on talent for offense, or defense. Cousins had great receivers. That makes it hard to evaluate Cousins for long term. How will Cousins do with less excellent receivers? What is Cousins actually worth, long term?

Personally, I think Cousins is a championship caliber QB and I fear the Redskins are on their way to a huge mistake. We shall see.

"Scales: McClain would be a big loss to the defensive line. I had him as one of my top three free agents to re-sign (along with Barry Church, and either Brandon Carr or Mo Claiborne). McClain was an unsung hero for the Cowboys defense in 2016. He led linemen with 41 tackles, but also got a good push up the middle of the pocket (2.5 sacks, nine pressures). He also had three tackles for loss.

When McClain missed the regular season finale at Philly with an ankle injury, rookie Maliek Collins moved over to take McClain's spot. If McClain leaves in free agency, would Collins move into his spot? If he does, what would that mean for Tyrone Crawford, who moved outside to DE when Collins took over the 3-technique?

Losing McClain could be more than the loss of a productive interior linemen; it could be a domino effect for the rest of the linemen. McClain was a critical component of the D-line rotation, and he was a bargain in 2016 playing for $1.1 million versus the cap."

Cousins: Reached out to gauge Redskins' plans

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins says he never demanded a trade to owner Dan Snyder but rather inquired what the team planned to do after placing the franchise tag on him.
Cousins told ESPN's Adam Schefter on his Know Them From Adam podcast that his only reason for reaching out to Snyder, as well as team president Bruce Allen, was to gauge their intentions.
"I did inquire if there was any interest in trading me to get an understanding of their perspective," Cousins said. "The answer I got back was Mr. Snyder communicated his belief in me and desire for me to remain a Redskin."
Cousins said he first heard of his trade demands -- sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Cousins had done so -- when a shoe store employee asked him about it while fitting his wife for shoes.
"I laughed and thought, 'I don't know where that comes from because that wasn't the case,'" Cousins told Schefter. "Somehow it got twisted to where an employee of the store is using the word 'demanded.' That's not the approach I took.". . . .

Terrell McClain reminds me of Jason Hacher.

"Washington also cut ties with defensive lineman Jason Hatcher. Hatcher mentioned the possibility of retiring after the Redskins playoff loss to Green Bay, but apparently the 'Skins could not wait for that decision.
Hatcher posted a message on his Instagram feed thanking Washington owner Dan Snyder and the organization for his time with the team. Signed to a four-year, $27.5 million contract after the 2013 season, Hatcher did not deliver much on the field in his two seasons with the Redskins. Releasing Hatcher will save the team more than $4 million against the salary cap, though if he retired the team would have recouped almost double that amount.

In two seasons with Washington, Hatcher amassed 7.5 sacks and 45 tackles. Coach Jay Gruden and GM Scot McCloughan often talked about Hatcher's leadership in the locker room as very valuable, but in the end, Hatcher's age (he will be 34 in July) and diminished play led to the team's decision."
