Detroit native, wrestler George 'The Animal' Steele dies

Steele, whose real name was William James "Jim" Myers, grew up in Madison Heights and played football at Michigan State before a knee injury curtailed his career.

He earned a master's degree from Central Michigan and went on to teach and coach wrestling and football at Madison High in Madison Heights.

His reputation as a teacher was top of the line. As a wrestler, he really sold a gimmick that was totally the opposite of him in real life. He was a part of one of the best Wrestlemania matches ever.

One of my two all-time favorite wrestling villains.
George and Killer Kowalski....always trying to defeat the good guys with their underhanded tactics.
RIP.

Seems like a lot more wrestler deaths the last few years. It must correspond in timing with a surge in the growth of the sport back 70's or 80's, in the same way there have been so many other celebrity deaths in the last couple years.

You do know just how retarded that question is, don't you?

Considering your comment "He was a part of one of the best Wrestlemania matches ever.", it implies you might think its real. A match would imply it was a contest. Its not a contest if the winners are decided in advance. Its a staged event.

Everybody knows what a professional wrestling match is.

You do know that Wrestlemania and other tv wrestling is fake?

What in the world does that have anything to do with what Redress just said.

Yes, wrestling is scripted, and most any adult knows that. You know what else is scripted? Most non-reality based television shows (and probably quite a few "reality" ones as well ;) ). That doesn't mean that the actors in those shows couldn't teach their profession to people, couldn't portray a character they aren't actually like, or put on a great performance.

It doesn't imply Redress believes it's real. It suggests Redress is using the vernacular of the television program (that they perform in "matches") and indicating that they found it to be one of the most enjoyable.

If I say Kit Harrington was part of one of the best Game of Thrones battles ever...would you suddenly stupidly believe that I think the battle scenes going on in Game of Thrones are REAL simply because I referred to it as a "battle"?

Kind of like titty dancers...just there for your entertainment.

Good point.
I would agree TV wrestling is highly entertaining.
Kinda like a Donald Trump press conference.......just not as surreal.

If I say "The Godfather was one of the best movies ever", does it imply I think the movie "is real"? For god's sake, think!

I don't know how big pro wresting was before Rocky 3, but I think it really took off into the stratosphere as a result of Hulk Hogan's role fighting Rocky in the charity match.

Stallone really had a way of finding opponents who came across as awesome on screen, like Clubber Lang (Mr. T) from later in the same movie. But yeah, wrestling was huge back then and I remember Wrestlemania 3 sold over 90,000 tickets at the Pontiac Silverdome. Hulk body slammed Andre the Giant in that one:

But yeah, Steele was a big part of all that. RIP.

GTAS was my favorite WWF bad guy when I was a kid in the 80s! I think he is the only person ever to eat a turnbuckle.

RIP and thanks for the entertainment.

That's a shame, but it seems like he lived a good long life.

As far as WM3 goes, I will always say the match between Savage and Steamboat is the single greatest match of all time. The story told and the flawless execution of the match is just unrivaled by nearly any other match.

It's clear you don't understand how professional wrestling works. That's okay, it's not for everyone.

However, for those who DO understand wrestling, they understand there are certain qualities to a match which lend itself to a high aesthetic value. The match he referenced is one of those matches. It doesn't suggest he thinks it is real, it suggests he has an understanding and appreciation for pro wrestling.

I always find it hilarious how quickly some people want to feel intellectually superior by making the most obvious statement possible, without realizing the absurdity of making such a statement.

I loved George "The Animal" Steele. He always cracked me up. RIP.

Ivan Kohlof passed away today.

Godfather was a movie, so calling it a movie is accurate. A WCW, and WWE/WWF "match" is staged and not a match. So calling it a match is not accurate.

Actually, a match is in fact the normal term for it. Maybe you should spend less time trying to feel superior by stating the obvious, and more time learning about what you are talking about.

A match is a contest. Not a rigged or staged event where the winner has already been decided. If you called the God Father a documentary instead of a movie most people would think that you believed it was real.

It has nothing to do with feeling superior.

Rest in peace.

In soccer, they call the field a pitch. When the TV commentators note the teams are on the pitch, does that mean they are playing baseball?

Surely you're intelligent enough to understand each industry has terms specific to the industry, correct?

It has nothing to do with feeling superior.
Of course it did. As a longtime wrestling fan, I'm very familiar with people making the same stupid comment you made. It's always for the same reason.

You said something dumb and were called out for it. Just move on already.
