"The Washington Redskins interviewed former Jacksonville Jaguars Coach Gus Bradley on Wednesday about their vacant defensive coordinator position, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. The Redskins have strong interest in Bradley, who was fired by the Jaguars after their Week 15 loss to the Houston Texans. Bradley, in his first head coaching opportunity, went 14-48 in four seasons with Jacksonville and never finished a season with more than five wins. A deal is not expected to be made Wednesday night, according to two people with knowledge of the situation."

could be an interesting process. Seems the Skins are trying to avoid publicity about interviews.

"The Washington Redskins on Monday interviewed Mike Pettine for their open defensive coordinator position.

Pettine, 50, has been in various NFL roles dating back to the 2002 season when he began as a coaching assistant for the Baltimore Ravens. He held that role in 2003 as well before being promoted to assistant defensive line coach in 2004.

In 2005, Pettine’s role for the Ravens changed to outside linebackers coach, where he would remain through the 2008 season.

In 2009, Pettine was named the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator under Rex Ryan. He held that position through the 2012 season.

During his four seasons in the position, the Jets’ defense held opposing passers to an NFL-low 71.0 quarterback rating, completion percentage (52.6 percent) and passing yards (186.3 per game).

Additionally, New York forced the three-and-out drive on nearly 30 percent of possessions, the highest mark during that time. The defense also allowed the second-fewest yards per game (294.8) and posted a 34.6 third-down efficiency mark while holding their opponents to an average of 20.0 points per game (seventh-fewest in the league

The Redskins list of fired coaches was on the Transactions List last week.

The coaches who have resigned is also not listed.

"Ryan, 54, began his NFL coaching career with the Arizona Cardinals in 1994, serving two seasons as the team’s defensive backs coach.

During his time with the Cardinals, Ryan helped Pro Football Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams earn his first two trips to the Pro Bowl.

In 1994, Williams led the NFL in interceptions with nine and was named a first-team All-Pro during the 1995 season.

The Cardinals would rank No. 1 in the NFL in takeaways during the 1995 season with 42.

Ryan would join the college ranks for four seasons before returning to the NFL in 2000 as linebackers coach for the New England Patriots.

In his four seasons with New England (2000-03), the Patriots won two Super Bowls behind a defense led by linebackers Tedy Bruschi and Willie McGinest, who was named a Pro Bowler following the 2003 season.

The Patriots allowed just 238 points during the 2003 regular season – lowest in the NFL – before holding both the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts to 14 points each in the playoffs.

Ryan was named defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders for the 2004 season."

Redskins Interview Rob Ryan For Defensive Coordinator

//

"they [Redskins] are scheduled to interview San Francisco 49ers linebackers coach Jason Tarver later this week, according to a person with knowledge of the situation."

"Tarver would be the fourth known interview by the Redskins for the position since they fired Joe Barry on Jan. 5. The 42-year-old spent the past two years as the linebackers coach for the 49ers, who earlier this month fired Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly after one season. Tarver was previously the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders from 2012 to 2014. Oakland ranked 18th, 22th and 21st, respectively, over that period in total defense and 28th, 29th and 32nd in points allowed.

Tarver broke into the NFL in 2001 with the 49ers as an offensive quality control coach. He was promoted to assistant running backs coach in 2004 and became the outside linebackers coach in 2005. He served under Redskins outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky from 2007 to 2010, when Manusky was San Francisco’s defensive coordinator.

Tarver left his position as outside linebackers coach to become the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Stanford in 2011. He returned to the NFL with the Raiders the following year.

Goodness, Rob Ryan being interviewed as DC? He's never succeeded as a DC, maybe one season in New Orleans however his track record is atrocious.

More Interviews: Dennis Thurman

"Thurman played cornerback in the NFL for nine years from 1978 to 1986, recording 36 career interceptions in 137 games. The bulk of his playing career was spent with the Dallas Cowboys, but he played his final season with the then St. Louis Rams.

In coaching since 1988, Thurman's coaching career started working with the secondary for the Cardinals before an eight-year run at his alma mater, Southern Cal. From there, Thurman came back to the pros, joining the Ravens coaching staff in 2002 working under Rex Ryan. In 2008, Thurman moved on with Ryan to the New York Jets, and in 2013, was named Jets defensive coordinator In 2014, he went to Buffalo with Ryan to serve as their defensive coordinator when Ryan was named head coach.

In four seasons as a coordinator, two in New York, two in Buffalo, Thurman's defenses ranked no worse than 19th, per Pro Football Reference."

"GUS BRADLEY

What he runs: 4-3, often with a single-high safety.

Coordinator experience: Seattle (2009-12).

Ties to Redskins: He was in Seattle with Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan and was a position coach in Tampa Bay when Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden were part of the Bucs' organization.

Pros: His success in helping build the Seahawks' defense led to him getting the head coaching job with the Jaguars. Bradley used the talent well as the Seahawks got more, using physical cornerbacks to play a more unique press zone. The Seahawks did a good job mixing fronts and using their talent to create a pass rush.

Cons: The Redskins lack the talent to play his style of a 4-3. His Seattle defenses struggled his first two years, until more talent arrived."

"John Pagano, the recently fired defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles-bound Chargers, spoke with Redskins officials Wednesday, bringing the number of candidates who have been interviewed to at least six.

Pagano, 49, had spent his entire NFL coaching career with the Chargers, starting as a defensive quality-control assistant in 2002 and working his way up to defensive coordinator in 2012. The Chargers’ defense ranked 16th in total yards allowed in 2016 (347.1). He is the brother of Chuck Pagano, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

"For the Redskins, replacing Barry, who has since joined former Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay’s staff as the Los Angeles Rams’ linebackers coach, has proved challenging. The Redskins’ defense is in need of upgrades at multiple positions after several free agent signings didn’t pan out, and the team invested many of its higher draft picks on the offensive side of the ball in recent years. Also, Coach Jay Gruden is entering the fourth year of a five-year deal, which is likely giving some candidates pause about the long-term stability of the job."

"Raheem Morris: Morris is currently the assistant head coach with the Atlanta Falcons, but has ties to Washington, having worked for the Redskins under Jim Haslett. The Falcons are still in the playoffs, meaning the Redskins now have to wait for them to be eliminated to formally contact Morris."

"Morris made his NFL coaching debut with Tampa Bay as a defensive quality control coach in 2002, when the club won Super Bowl XXXVII. The Buccaneers defense allowed an NFL low 12.3 points per game, the third best scoring defense since 2000. He served as a defensive assistant with the Bucs in 2003 and as assistant defensive backs coach from 2004-05.

In 10 seasons in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers finished fifth in total defense five times, while leading the League in 2002 and 2005. He also helped he team finish as the top rated pass defense three times (2002, 2004 & 2007).

Morris began his collegiate coaching career an assistant coach at Hofstra in 1998, where he was responsible for coaching the offensive scout team, developing scouting reports, and video breakdown. He moved on to Cornell University as defensive backs coach and special teams assistant for the 1999 season. Morris served as defensive backs coach at Hofstra from 2000 to 2001 before joining the Buccaneers. He also held a defensive minority internship position with the New York Jets in the fall of 2001. Morris played safety at Hofstra from 1994-97, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He is an Irvington, N.J. native."

Skins lose out on Gus Bradley.

"The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to terms on a contract with Gus Bradley to be their defensive coordinator, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bradley, who was fired as Jacksonville Jaguars coach in December with two games left in his fourth season, was a hot commodity as a defensive coordinator candidate. He also drew interest from the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers

Bradley, 50, interviewed with the Chargers earlier this week, and they were hopeful he would eventually accept their offer."

"The Redskins will promote outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator, according to several people with knowledge of the situation on Sunday. It's the fourth time Manusky, 50, will serve as a NFL defensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Redskins last year, Manusky held NFL defensive coordinator positions with the San Francisco 49ers (2007 to 2010), the San Diego Chargers (2011) and the Indianapolis Colts (2012 to 2015).

Manusky's tenure with the 49ers overlapped with Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan, who was 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel (2005 to 2007) and the franchise's general manager (2008-2009), and where he had one his best defenses as a coordinator in 2009. The 49ers ranked 15th in total defense but fourth in points allowed.

"With Manusky's promotion, the Redskins now must find three defensive coaches for Gruden's staff. The move creates an opening at outside linebackers coach. The team already had vacancies at defensive line and defensive backs after firing assistant coaches Robb Akey and Perry Fewell along with Barry. The Redskins opted to retain inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti and assistant defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant, however. Pleasant has received interested from the Rams, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, but the Redskins would like to keep him on staff, and he could be a candidate for defensive backs coach"

Cavanaugh, 60, brings 33 years of NFL experience as a coach and player to the role, including 14 as a quarterback with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants from 1978-91. His résumé also includes 12 seasons as an offensive coordinator at the collegiate and professional levels.

"O’Connell, 31, joins the Redskins after spending the 2016 season overseeing special projects for the San Francisco 49ers. In 2015, he served as quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns and worked with quarterback Josh McCown, who became the first player in Browns franchise history to throw for 300-or-more yards in three consecutive games.

Prior to coaching, O’Connell spent time with the Patriots, Lions, Jets, Dolphins and Chargers during his five year

"Tomsula, 48, joins the Redskins with more than three decades of coaching experience, including nine seasons at the NFL level. Prior to spending one season as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, Tomsula served as the 49ers’ defensive line coach for eight seasons from 2007-14.

Tomsula’s defensive lines in San Francisco were consistently strong against the run, as the 49ers ranked fourth in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (98.4) and second in rushing average (3.72) across his eight seasons

'Englehart, 31, assumes his new title after serving as the Redskins’ assistant strength and conditioning coach for the last seven seasons. Prior to joining the Redskins in 2010, he served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the UFL’s Florida Tuskers in 2009

" Washington Redskins on Thursday hired James Rowe as assistant defensive backs coach, the team announced.

Rowe was most recently the defensive coordinator for Valdosta State, a position he held for one season prior to joining the Redskins. During his season with the Blazers, the defensive unit finished with a Division II-best 27 interceptions and ranked fifth in opposing passing efficiency, limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 96.2 passer rating.

Valdosta State safety Kenny Moore also earned first-team All-American honors from the American Football Coaches Association.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant cornerbacks coach for Jacksonville University. He was promoted to the role of assistant coach for the wide receivers in 2014 before being named Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator for the 2014 season.

During the 2015 season, Rowe became a member of the coaching staff at the University of Florida, working with the secondary."

I wonder why Dan Snyder is not making headlines making big offers to great coaches. I don't believe there are any caps on spending for coaches. Some of the coaches who worked for the Redskins have apparently left for better money. It is nice that Gruden's ex coaching staff is getting raises with other teams, but it seems that Gruden could use some help to attract excellent replacement coaches.

To help attract coaches, Snyder could give Gruden a year or two extension on his contract.
