Prime Minister Theresa May says Fifa's poppy stance 'utterly outrageous' - BBC Sport

Prime Minister Theresa May says Fifa's apparent refusal to allow England and Scotland players to wear armbands featuring poppies is "outrageous".

The two teams will meet at Wembley on 11 November, the day when the United Kingdom remembers its war dead.

World governing body Fifa reiterated its ban on political, religious or commercial messages on shirts.

"Before they start telling us what to do, they jolly well ought to sort their own house out," said Mrs May.

"Our football players want to recognise and respect those who have given their lives for our safety and security - I think it is absolutely right they should be able to do so."

Couldn't agree more with the PM, this stance by FIFA is disgusting. The poppy is neither a political, religious or commercial symbol and should not be treated as such.

I am with you there. Of course, the peoples that lost the wars might feel disturbed. But the idea that that obstinately corrupt organization should have a say in anything before total reconstruction and replacement of every individual that was in any position of importance in the organization is in itself disturbing to the point, where seeing a reference to soccer is an aggravation

If it is an Opium Poppy flower, then I approve of the ban. Fifa has suffered serious drug taint and might just be attempting to be pro-active.

FIFA is correct. It should be banned as it is political. If they allow this, then they will be forced to allow similar stuff from other countries.

For example, Albania playing Serbia in a game, where Albania has a "Greater Albania" badge on. Or Armenia playing Turkey, where Armenia puts on something to honor the genocide victims and so on and so on.. has the potential to cause a hell of a lot of problems.

Question is how severe the punishment will be. Most likely monetary, but points deduction maybe.. would definitely deter other countries doing something similar. The rules are clear on this.

It's not political. Read up on the origin of the Poppy, it doesn't support wars, conflicts etc. It simply remembers the fallen on both sides.

Not to mention they allowed in it 2011.

Sorry it is political.

1) It is British only, and was put in place to remember the fallen of Commonwealth soldiers. Later on it was expanded to remember the fallen on both sides. Dont even try to deny that..
2) Having a poppy on your shirt when playing Serbia (Wales is), the country that started WW1.. is frankly a tad disrespectful.
3) again.. it is only British. Had it been some sort of universal symbol that was used across Europe and the world.. then fine.. but it is not. It is British only (and some commonwealth I suspect).

Hence it is clearly political.

Now the problem is of course FIFA already allowed it on a black armband a few years ago, so it should probably allow that at least. But on the jersey it self.. hell no.

- Its worn by British, Canadian, Aussies, New Zealand.
- Its also be worn by Americans, Pakistan, the French and most recently by the Albanian President and the Ukrainians.
- They only ever wanted to wear it on an armband.

I have NEVER seen the French wear it like the British do. Nor the Americans. As for the Pakistanis.. err hello Commonwealth. And that is 5 out of 200 countries on the planet.. FIFA does not only represent the 5, but all 200+.

And they wanted to wear a poppy on the shirt, but changed their mind to the armband when they met resistance..

The Americans gave out poppies up until the late 1960's. It's only became a "political" issue in recent years because of the PC crowd.
