Sharapova suspended for TWO YEARS

The hell she was. The drug she was taking was legal until 3 months before she was "busted".

That is like saying you have broken the speed limit for the last 10 years, because now the state has set the speed limit down from 50 miles an hour to 40... and hence you are a law breaker and deserve to go to prison because of your "law breaking" the last 10 years.

The sports business is about as corrupt as corruption comes. I cannot really understand the people that are into watching sports. Especially at the higher levels and in the popular stuff like soccer, where money is the defining factor and the teams depend on players purchased around the world and only fleeting connections to the cities they play for. And, when you hear the numbers of doped athletes, the recent mess in Russia was only more visible, it seems so silly to take the stuff seriously. It is certainly a good education we give the kids in how much it pays to be a crook and lie about it.

frankly i'm not sure which has cheated more obviously, putin's athletes

If that comment was directed at Sharapova she's lived in the US since 1994, since she was 7 years old.

The mistake was allowing her to get away with it until now

Get away with it? It was legal. Nothing to 'get away with'.

Smells more like "she is Russian and it is PC to hate all Russians at the moment".

Lets put it this way.. dont you think the Williams sisters take "doctor prescribed" drugs that enhance their performance? Are they cheaters?

But of course she needs to be punished, she made a mistake. But giving her the same punishment as a deliberate doper... come on.

Have the Williams sisters ever been caught cheating? and Given how dominate Serena is-you know damn well she is under a microscope.

and Russia has a long history of doping. same with East Germany. I want to see Maria obliterated by Serena again-ever since Sharapova made that catty statement about Serena and her married French Coach, Serena has annihilated the Shrieker

She had been taking it for a long time. They sent out an email in January telling them it was now a banned substance and she ignored it. Two years is absurd though.

Athletes had somewhat more notice than that. WADA issued a notice of the proposed changes in September 2015 Sharapova had five warnings it was about to happen.

I hadn't heard that. That is a little more damning for her then.

You mean like Lance Armstrong? He was never caught... the Williams sisters are big business for tennis... just as Armstrong was for cycling. Just saying, that just because they have not been caught, does not mean they are not cheating.

So does the US... doping was ripe during the 1980s and on wards. Lance Armstrong and the Balco scandal just to mention a few. The US has had more world 100 sprinters banned for doping than anyone else.. including world record holders, and that is only in the last decade. Only real difference is that in the US, sports is mostly in the private sector, so money has a massive factor in hiding the truth. In Russia it is a national issue, so national pride pushes that... in the end it is the same difference.

your hatred of Maria or whoever, nor my issue with the swindle sisters is irrelevant.

Maria did something wrong, and she admits she needs to be punished. But to be punished in the same way as someone doing the crime deliberately is... pathetic and goes against every moral fiber in most peoples body.

This Meldonium timeline is a fascinating (and damning for Russian sport) read.

Basically it was the standard Russian go-to doping drug. Of 180 odd athletes caught so far, only a handful haven't been Russians.

UPDATE: A Timeline – Meldonium | Sports Integrity Initiative

So what.. Meldonium was legal until the 1st January 2016. All sports men use drugs to enhance their performances.. from Murray to random wrestler. Hell I remember when Rooney had broken his metatarsal right up to one of the big tournaments. He "doped" his way to fitness.. why? He used medicine to improve his broken metatarsal faster than it normally would heal. Yes, it was legal and still is.. just as Meldonium was until the 1st January 2016.

I would not be surprised one bit that a huge portion of the non-Russian athletes also used Meldonium. Has anyone even looked into that.. doubt it.

swindle sisters? are you a racist-mad that a couple black American ladies are kicking the aryan tennis babes' butts? what's wrong-mad that Denmark's athletics is third rate? your best tennis player is Polish? (and one of Serena's very very best friends btw)

and it has nothing to do with her being Russian.

I care about team sports (I include auto racing) and very little for individual sports (like tennis, golf, etc.) except the Olympics (to a point).

But watching a bunch or rich people playing tennis or golf means almost nothing to me.

All I really know about this woman is she is pretty for a female athlete, is Russian and was/is very good at tennis. And now I know she is suspended for 2 years.
