College/High School/Olympic Wrestling--2013-2015

Good on his feet, a little too much length for Lewis. Sometimes Valencia tires late, but he did look good.

Edit: #15 seed up next. Pretty exciting.

Martin only wins as a freshman as Dean gets the late takedown on the heavily favored senior.

I appreciate the shots of the Moms and the families and the emotion. Pretty special.

#5 and #6 in the finals at 184.
Valencia beat Hall in last year's 174lb c-ship match.

Pretty big deal to see your kid make it this far.
End of a long journey.

With HS and Olympics having 220 and 213 respectively, College should also have 220.

Consolation winners tonight that made All-American have to wrestle again right now. I’d prefer that tomorrow AM.

Next year in Minneapolis is in the Vikings football stadium.

1. Remember Stephen Neal, offensive guard for the NE Patriots..
Never played a down of football in College but was a 2-time National Heavyweight
Champion Division I and 4-time All-American..He's got three Super Bowl rings..
2. The other notable is Carlton Haselrig, 3-time D-1 and 3-time D-2 Heavyweight Champion who played five years in the NFL at guard also..

Both men credit wrestling for their ability to move their feet and fight hand-to-hand and go upper-body..

You may have heard that the Olympics has gotten rid of Wrestling in 2016, both freestyle and Greco-Roman..
I am not as up in arms as those like the legendary Dan Gable and will be happy to toss out my two cents worth..

There is a huge difference between those two forms of the art of wrestling and FOLKSTYLE wrestling,
which is on a fabulous rebound all over the Nation in high school and college..

I prefer to focus on the positive direction that wrestling can take our youth and the mental discipline and character it builds..
It is a blood sport like no other IMO..Once it's in your blood, it's there forever, like going to the gun range I guess..

This year's D-1 tournament is in Oklahoma City on March 20-22 2014, Thursday-Saturday, also the first weekend of NCAAB March Madness..
There are some great web-sites out there for high school and collegiate wrestling I will post in the future ..

Wrestled from 4th grade in PA, all the way through graduation. Has helped a lot when transitioning to combatives in the Army. It should be in the Olympics as it's basically the original event.

Ha-ha....I seem to recall this same subject coming up in previous years.

Likewise.

Really?
That doesn't sound like a good venue at all.
Domed stadium....didn't heavy snow collapse one of those domes in the recent past?
I'm sure they'll provide seating nearer the mats than football seating would provide...hopefully.

After a yuuuge uproar wrestling was re-instated.
I'm guessing wrestling was on the chopping block because of TV money.
It just isn't a glamour sport like synchronized swimming or freaking badminton, I suppose.

Penn State and Pennsylvania High Schools have certainly dominated the last decade. You might like the finals tomorrow night on ESPN. Penn State has 5 finalists out of the 10 weights and 4 are repeat champions.

The sport has a limited base, so we’re seeing more pay-for apps and such. It’s really become a club recruiting sport at the HS level. See Blair Academy in New Jersey.

I've seen Blair Academy win a lot of national HS tourneys.
Out in Cali., we've got the parochial schools recruiting athletes statewide.
I've got mixed feelings about this recruiting.
I want kids to get the best HS education/sports experience possible, but small towns lose their top athletes to schools that recruit.
Seems unfair.
I think something is going on in Clovis, California too. Year after year, the Clovis schools are top 1-2 in wrestling.

The recruiting of junior high kids is nationwide. It’s all sports. These high schools have dormitories. Public schools in Iowa, for instance, have open enrollment. The rich keep getting richer.

Another one is the red-shirting of junior high kids for one and even two years. As long as they don’t turn 20 during their senior season, they’re eligible. I turned 17 in December of my senior year.

My anger management skills were lacking again tonight during close Penn State matches.

Cali doesn't have open enrollment, but I think religion affiliated schools are an exception to the rule. Hence, we have a whole lot of St. this or that type schools. Perennial national HS football power De LaSalle is an example.

This is just wrong.

Yeah...I really don't dislike Penn State. Cael is a great coach, I just tend to root for the underdogs.
You know...a David vs Goliath sort of thing.....heyyy....maybe I should have attended a religious school?

I've watched Penn State dominate a in a few matches this year, Bo Nickal making short work of his people.

Mueller versus Lee should be good.

Mueller versus Lee should be good.

Lee rides out the 1st period Mueller does likewise in 2nd.....oops..... stall call on Mueller.

Lee stayed pretty aggressive in the 3rd. Didn't try to just sit on his lead. Good bout.

Lee clearly dominant on his feet. Screwed up taking down in the 2nd. Could be a 4-timer. Fix and Suriano next. Should be another great match on paper. Yianni D. and McKenna in the hole.

Agreed. I think wrestlers and coaches are very certain that they can get that escape. Doesn't always work out for them.

In before they rule on the brick.

The headgear was close. Either way, the match is over. 141 I’d give a 7 out of 10, 149 an 8.5 and 157 a 5.

Hands to the face is a tricky call and I've seen a couple errors in judgement.
Don't really like the rule.
I'm more concerned with the rabbit punches that I see occurring during matches.

I thought the headgear call was the right one. Coach Smith just trying to give his guy some help.

McKenna was pinned if it was freestyle. Could have gone zero to 4.

Just saw this thread and figured I'd give a shout out to Nick Gwiazdowski, also a two time heavyweight college national champ, one time runner up and 4 time all american.

A really nice kid too.

I thought that there was no clear control, OSU should have won this match.
