Lawsuit could force secretive network promoting rightwing laws into the open | US news | The Guardian

Suit could threaten the existence of Alec, a network that brings together conservative lawmakers and corporate interests

Alec, the secretive “bill mill” responsible for spreading rightwing legislation across the US, is facing a legal challenge to force it to open up to public scrutiny in a test case that could threaten the existence of the controversial network.

A lawsuit filed on Wednesday in a superior court in Maricopa county, Arizona, questions the way that local state legislators are allowed to participate in Alec events. The filing is timed to mark the opening of Alec’s annual summit in Scottsdale, Arizona, in which elected lawmakers will be teaming up with corporate lobbyists to frame business-friendly legislation in sessions closed to the general public.

I don't know much about this group but this kind of politics-business relationship does not sound very American to me. The 'secretive'part bothers me, as does the active participation of lawmakers. Would not be surprised if all kinds of deals were being made under that veil of secrecy. And Maricopa county is pretty conservative.

It might be unsavory but it is also very American. Its the way just about all legislation comes about. I mean, people don’t actually believe that legislators write the law do they? They have peeps for that and sometimes they’re corporations or lobbyists.

Why the secrecy? Why the demonstrations against Alec in places like Chicago? These people & their hidden motives together with slimy & greedy politicians can brew up a slimy mess that suddenly appears from nowhere.

Secrecy? Are there supposed to be observation rooms where you watch people writing legislation? We’ve never done that.

If this bothers you, then you are probably triggered to the max at the marriage between the Chamber of Commerce and both left and right wing Congressional politicians.

Oh...wait...you probably know less about the CoC than you do about Alec.

Doesn't sound very democratic to me. Sounds more like a meeting in a Mason's Lodge with secret handshakes & rituals for who knows what purpose.
