Texas border mayor charged with trying to rig own election

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas mayor on the U.S.-Mexico border was charged Thursday with trying to cheat his way into office through an illegal voting scheme in a region long plagued by public corruption scandals.

The arrest of Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina also comes at a time of heightened tension over voting in Texas, where Republicans in the coming weeks want to toughen penalties for election crimes over opposition from Democrats. Meanwhile, a bungled search in January for non-citizens on Texas’ voter rolls set off lawsuits and questions from Congress .

Any idea what his political party is? It's not easily apparent, even with a quick Google search.

Local races are typically non-partisan but that is a very blue part of Texas.

Ah, so are you saying some TX elections are not resolved with primaries leading to a two-candidate "general" election?

That's too bad. When your party affiliation need only be assumed, you're dealing with one-party government. Works great in Russia & China, why not Texas?

Correct. There may be multiple candidates running for that local office (e.g. judge, sheriff, clerk or mayor) but they are not identified by political party on the ballot.

Elected city officials are not partisan. However, county and state elected officials and judges are elected in partisan elections.

    Thanks.

Now that is pretty damn interesting, and I think I like it.

I saw this yesterday. In the article I read, this town has a history of "issues" when it comes to elections.
