SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (Reuters) - The leader of an armed militia that spent two months rounding up migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border before he was arrested on federal weapons charges was hospitalized after a jailhouse attack, his lawyer and authorities said on Wednesday.

Larry Hopkins, 69, whose group of self-styled citizen border cops drew condemnation from civil liberties advocates, suffered broken ribs in the beating by fellow inmates on Tuesday at the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, according to his attorney, Kelly O’Connell.

Broken ribs. Sounds like some kicking might have been involved. I doubt he has learned his lesson. Not even convicted felons can abide this character.

I'm betting he helped put several of them in there.

I don't think there's any sport in beating up an elderly man in jail. He is obviously in no shape to defend himself. Without their guns his whole militia look like just a bunch of overweight slobs.

But Karma's a bitch. The people in jail are not nice people but they do have standards. Whether they were his victims or just people who don't like racists and perceived him as one (a latino especially could be forgiven for thinking so) getting himself locked up with them is asking for it. Another reason that most of us try to stay out of the can: it's full of violent people.

The Sheriffs should have anticipated this and separated him from the others.

It very well could be Karma. Those who assaulted him should be charged.

I seriously doubt that. He was probably just being an racist asshole and got his ass kicked.

The dudes wasnt special he was most likely just treated like everyone else. Getting your ass kicked in jail is part of the consequences of his own actions. ANd he knew that going in being that he is already a felon.

I know, but law enforcement has a responsibility to keep the peace in their own facilities as well. His punishment for whatever he's done should be decided by the courts not the mob.

I agree completely. But the reality is that the guy is a felon and knew the risks that he was taking. While I agree that being attacked in jail should not be possible, we all know it happens.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. The general population is true justice. Once he gets sentenced somewhere they'll kill 'em.

Nope: he got his ass kicked because of what he's doing and they way he's doing it. He's marked now.
