Martha McSally appointed to John McCain's Senate seat

(CNN)Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is appointing Republican Rep. Martha McSally to the Senate, Ducey said in a statement Tuesday.

McSally narrowly lost a race this year to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema for Arizona's other Senate seat, which opened after Sen. Jeff Flake opted against seeking re-election.

Jon Kyl is resigning. McSally will replace him. This is the seat that was held by the late John McCain.

And you have no opinion on the matter?

No observations to make?

Get me started please.

Well, Martha better enjoy it while she can....If last November's election is any indication, she'll just be "keeping it warm" for a Democrat.

She only lost by about 2% in a very Democratic year to probably the Democrats' best candidate. While I wouldn't call McSally the favorite, I think it will once again be a closely contested election.

That's plausible, but election contests aren't "horseshoes or hand grenades."

Not for an individual election, but close elections imply future elections could go the other way with small national shifts or small changes in candidate quality.

In a national environment where Trump's certain to be as unpopular as he is right now (probably more), I would want to be in McSally's shoes.

She was chosen by voters and only lost by 2%. That makes her the perfect fit.

Yeah, I don't see her keeping the seat.

Nor would I, but I don’t think it’s anything close to a sure thing she loses.

She underperformed Ducey in EVERY district. In some districts she underperformed by more than 10%. She was a horrible candidate for senate and may well have cost AZ both her house seat and the Senate seat.

I agree with you as go national elections in midterm years and "off schedule" elections. Presidential ones are a different animal, so to speak for they have "coattails" that are material. Given the "coattail" effect, if Trump's at the top of the ticket and he's not "turned around," things may not be so close as they were in the midterms.

Yeah, Dems are already creating false ballots to conveniently "find" if McSally happens to pull ahead on the count. Worked once, it'll probably work again.

Every other statewide candidate underperformed Ducey in every district. He’s a popular incumbent governor.

Eh. The coattail effect has been somewhat overrated.

I don't blame McSally. On election night she was ahead. Because Arizona has an inadequate system in place to count votes it just opens up a situation of voter fraud in close races. Another reason I think McSally was the right choice by Ducey is because the McCain family was making it known they were against Ducey choosing McSally. I am very pleased with his choice.

Well, whatever political strategists McSally engages to help retain her seat come 2020 will need to hew to that notion and structure their efforts accordingly....As an observer, it won't be hard to know whether they do or don't. If McSally dissociates herself from Trump, it'll be clear that she and her team don't "buy" the "coattails effect" notion.
