A rising star in the Democratic Party could pull off an unlikely victory in the upcoming US mid-term elections by unseating a big-name Republican in the traditionally conservative state of Texas.

Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke is bouncing on a small stage in Edinburg, waving his arms wildly, all 6ft 4ins (193cm) of his gangly frame crackling with energy.

His toes are well over the edge of the boards and his suede shoes are soaking up dark splashes of sweat from his brow.

Mr O'Rourke, who has represented El Paso and its surrounds in the US House of Representatives since 2013, is running for the Senate - and you can't fault him for effort.

"Everyone is welcome," he smiles to the packed audience, insisting that the invitation even extends to "the dude in the Make America Great Again cap".

Texas is another race I will be watching closely next month.

I've already sent off my mail-in ballot for Beto. I think he has a real chance considering how easy it is for people to hate Lyin' Ted Cruz. Even if Beto doesn't win, it's still going a long way to show that even once solid red states like Texas are starting to revolt against Trump and his GOP lap dogs. Don't get comfortable, Texas is in play.

As of today...
Cruz has a 5 in 7 chance of winning.
O'Rourke has a 2 in 7 chance of winning

Said the democrats for the past 20 years...

As you mention Texans dont like Cruz that much, hes got a negative approval rating vs a young democrat star with big money out of state funding if you cant unseat an incumbent like that then Texas is not in play.

May I point you to the very low profile governor race in Texas where Abbot is projected to win by 20 points

Record number of Texans register to vote amid tight Senate race

A record number of Texas residents have registered to vote in the November midterm elections, according to state officials.

According to the secretary of state’s office, almost 15.7 million Texans were registered as of Monday, marking an 11 percent increase from the previous midterm election, in 2014, Dallas News reported.

The figure is also a significant increase from the 15.2 million residents who were registered for the primary elections in March, when a record number of Democrats and Republicans cast ballots.

I think Ted Cruz can make better use of his Harvard education i another line of work.

Not really big on DUI or burglary in a candidate. Looks like a good yard sign though.

Cruz better take BO seriously as unqualified as he is...BO is channeling the opaque barry generalisms to disguise policies of theft combined with multi millions from outside interests.

BO campaign funding suggests that his interests lie in damaging Texas rather than helping in anyway.

Rep. Beto O'Rourke - Texas District 16

Its enough to review BOs hateful donors list to vote against him regardless of Tex Cruz and his "unlikeability".

no matter the 2018 outcome a strong 2020 national contender

I think it's Beto's DUI that is most attractive about him, though the burglary arrest is mighty persuasive.

That's great! I like the idea of greater voter participation, however, how many of these new voters are US citizens? There is no way to know.

given the de minimis amount of prosecution for voter fraud, what causes you to believe this is a genuine issue

Because there is no way to stop a non-citizen from voting. They can all vote and there is no way to stop them. If there is, please tell me what it might be.

Being a media darling doesn't make one a rising political star. Victory and accomplishment do. Beto is short on accomplishment, and victory unlikely...

I absolutely smile at the Democrats blowing money on O'Rourke when he has no chance to win in Texas. It keeps them from sending donations over to candidates that are in races they could actually win.

The pervasive requirement for photo ID in order to qualify as a valid voter
The prevalence of voter registration requirements
The prospect of prosecution for casting a fraudulent vote

Money well spent
It raises his profile for a 2020 presidential run a la JFK

They have to be citizens to vote man.

Well I dunno; look at a map from 2016: the biggest cities are remaining blue -

Blue cities in TX.jpg

Cruz is not a popular person in TX. And cities are the high population centers.

I agree. They should be a US citizen to vote, however, there is no way to guarantee or even check if they are a US citizen. No county requires a person wanting to registering to vote to prove they are a US citizen, not one. If you know of one, please let me know. Thanks.

.....

What the GOP has counted on in Texas is that young people and hispanics do not vote to change elections.

What was a sure thing for TxGOP that young people and hispanics would stay home...aint happening.

If Texas is a deep red state...no way Cruz should be only 5 points ahead.

In 2012 Cruz won by 16 points. 4.4 million to 3.1 million ...50% eligible voting.

I could not even remember who Cruz ran against in 2012. Win, lose or draw...people are not going to forget Beto.

In order to register, one has to have ID as a citizen.
