Oklahoma, Kentucky public schools close as thousands of teachers strike[W:21]

I have turned in people. The problem is these people are caught given a court date and they never show up but move on to another part of the country with a new name and business name. I asked why don't you throw them in jail until their day in court. The jails are full. If they are over crowded they are fined by the federal government. The only other recourse is to release someone else. So we put a flimflam artist in jail and release a more dangerous criminal. Then you have the illegals that our federal government should be deporting getting out of jail and going right back on our streets. So the local government just takes the position of why even waste your time arresting them.

That is what happens when we have a society with one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. If we'd stop imprisoning people for victimless crimes, then the law would have more teeth for real crime.

The people paying your salary have to decide between a 98 Camry or health care.

Oh get over yourself. The ultrarich are more than capable of sparing a few bucks so that the middle class can remain middle. In fact those horrible, evil labor unions that the Right loves to hate are a big part of why you have an opportunity to enjoy a middle-class standard of living.

I have been in the union and have many family members in the union that is why I do not support the democratic party. Their support of illegal aliens undermines everything the unions fought for. While they claim to support the unions they also support legislation that sends our jobs to other countries. So save the lie on how the democrats support the unions for those without a clue.

You know full and well all the job protections that your unions give you. You also know, or if you don't you should know, that the Republicans have been on a union-dismantling campaign for decades. Their solution to your being undercut by cheap labor is to reduce your bargaining power, your protection, your rights. So if it really is unions that you support, the Republican party will be of no help.

Furthermore, way too many politicians of both parties continue to vote for "get tough on crime" laws, which don't help crime and do crowd out prisons. So when people commit real crimes, ranging anything from fraud to murder, there is pressure on the system to release them early. At the very least your situation, assuming you are telling the whole story, raises the need to reform our broken criminal justice system. It also raises the need to reform our broken immigration system.

Out of the blue: I'm all for paying teachers what they are worth and a good teacher is worth a lot. I also believe in a merit-based system, not unionized.

Merit based pay will not work fairly in the teaching professions. What many people fail to realize is that it is the parents that will make or break their kids when it comes to them being successful in their education. Many parents dont give a shtzz about their kids education or have dont have the time and/or money to invest even if they wanted to.

Then you have those parents that are involved in their kids education. These parents hire tutors, help them with homework, attends school activities, etc. These kids are more than likely to succeed in their education since the parents WANT their kids to succeed.

They dont need to base that evaluation on one year, it should be an average over time, and new teachers will earn more over time if they do well. Just like in other professions, you make less when starting out. But in this case, except for cost of living raises, their pay increases would be paid based on merit.

So they wouldnt be penalized for one difficult or sub-par class.

so, a teacher working 2nd grade in a school for, say, 10 or more years where most of the families are poor and/or dont give a schit about their kids education will receive a raise? or should the teacher be moved to affluent area where the parents want their kids to succeed?

Sorry, there are some things that just beyond teachers control.
