    Idiots in Tucson

Here's one for the record books.

Tucson is on the short list of places for Amazon to build a new plant. The city Economic Development Council decided to send Jeff Bezos a Saguaro cactus as kind of a gift to show their appreciation for his consideration. That's nice.

Except for a couple of things.

A Saguaro cactus is a desert plant. It needs a generally dry and sunny climate to thrive and even then only grows in certain elevation ranges. How much sun and dry is there in Seattle? NONE!!!!

The folks at Amazon were able to figure that out but our own people, not so much. This is the kind of stupid crap that prevents Tucson from getting off the ground floor economically. The idiots running the city and county are more concerned about appearances and what cocktail parties they might get invited to than they are about actually bringing in business that can help grow the community.

Marana gets it. Oro Valley gets it. Those towns got it enough to make sure that they broke off from Tucson and went their own way. Tucson, however, is too ****ing stupid to recognize a good thing when they see it. These idiots are more concerned that if we put 50k people to work in high paying jobs we'll gentrify all the homeless and illegal aliens out of town. We can't be having any of that in Tucson!! We gotta make sure that we keep the streets full of potholes and the sidewalks full of potheads. That's what Tucson is all about, damn it!!

Does it have to be placed outdoors? My mother has grown cacti indoors under controlled conditions.

Hell I grow trout in my basement by using a chiller.

Well, I don't know for sure that a Saguaro can't live indoors under the right conditions but it was something like a 21' tall specimen they sent and I know that it requires LOTS of sunlight (they don't even grow on north facing slopes because there isn't direct sunlight there).

Plus if it ever fell over inside a house it would take out an entire wall.

Actually this is not a problem. Amazon already has a one acre greenhouse, in addition they have the $4 Billion Amazon Spheres, which are due to be completed soon. This is actually a well thought out gift from Tucson. The OP reacted from the heart without any knowledge of Amazon or its headquarters in Seattle. They are already cultivating the plants that will be moved there including fig trees, coffee, and many other plants from hot climates.

It never left Arizona, Amazon said no, going to be at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (Cool PLace).

Without regard to biospheres or whatever else Amazon has in Seattle the Saguaro needs lots and lots of sunlight. It was a decision that ranks right up there with the local zoo bringing in a polar bear. Yeah, the heat didn't kill it but what polar bear is going to want to live in Tucson?

Somebody else in the thread noted that the cactus is going to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. That's great but, frankly, the ASDM already has tons of Saguaro and sits right on the edge of Saguaro National Monument where the things grow wild and in abundance.

Always good to laugh at Tucson, I was there last Saturday, not my favorite place.

It's got some bright spots but economic development isn't its strong suit. Most of the time it feels like the city goes out of its way to stifle development.

What do you think that the city should point out to lure companies to develop there? Stifling heat? Cheap labor from the high number of illegals in the area? There would have to be huge reasons to my bottom line for me to want to move to any city that is a sanctuary city or as Tucson says, "immigrant friendly community."

They need to find ways to try and get them to come. This was an attempt.
