To the left is Potranco Road, that's oh.. about 2 miles from my place. I remember that day cause there were a LOT of sirens, now I know why. My condolences to the poor girls family.

SAN ANTONIO — A 19-year-old woman was killed Monday when a foreman crushed her with a backhoe bucket while she worked at a construction site in the far West Side.Bexar County deputies responded to an injured person call around 10:30 a.m. In the 13700 block of Potranco Road. When they arrived at the construction site, they discovered Destiny Rodriguez had been crushed to death.

Sgt. Roger Pedraza of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said Rodriguez was inside a dig site and the operator of the backhoe, later identified as a foreman at the site, didn't see her and dropped the bucket on top of her.

Horrible. This is the kind of thing that should NEVER EVER happen. And yet it does.

.....The victim’s sister said Rodriguez was also injured only last week when the same foreman allegedly hit her leg with a backhoe. An employee at the construction site said the foreman is “always careless.”......

These people have no right to complain, if they don't want to die, they should find another job.

Its texas, they have a right to work, not a right to safety.

Welcome folks to reality.

You, the worker, are an expendable asset to whatever company you work for. If you don't understand this, you need perspective.

It's not evil, it's not cruel. It's TRUTH.

You are hired to help provide said company with a service, your skills which helps said company, realize profits. Those profits are not for you, they are for those whom have a vested interest in the company, the investors.

Because let's face reality kids, companies don't get started on charity. Someone, or a group of people come up with an idea, called a business plan. They use this to attract investors who believe that plan will lead to profit. So they invest THEIR money for gain.

As the company grows, and is successful, more investors are drawn in. And thus more people are hired, like you. When there is an economic down turn, or the company runs into hard times through various factors from mis management to just bad luck... the people that placed their money into the company, the investors, get worried.

What the management get's faced with is often the choice between firing/laying off XX% of the company to increase profitability or having investors pull out, which could cause a run on the company and have it go out of business.

So You, the Worker, are an EXPENDABLE ASSET.

That's not evil, it's not "acidic". It's reality.

Suddenly expendable assets are human and have families?

Troll much ?

Horrible. This is the kind of thing that should NEVER EVER happen. And yet it does.

Well digging around it seems the guy running the site, the foreman was not a good person. And this poor 19 year old paid the price. Life sometimes is cruelly unfair.

As they say, safety regulations are written in blood.

I was the Safety PO for the OA Division and liaison for the Ops Dept on the Inchon, first time I heard that was from the Chief in charge of the Safety Dept. "I don't want to have to write up any new regulations, understood?"

If someone out there is teaching a course on online (mis)behavior, the above would serve as a fine example if "trolling".

Re: 'Careless' foreman crushes woman, 19, with backhoe at Bexar County construction s

Ahh, so the workers should have banded together(protected concerted activity)and demanded more safety before continuing to work?

Should they have just found another safer job and let some other worker die on that job?

I wonder why a foreman is operating a machine.

My guess is that if it wasn't a foreman working the machine, it would have been an hourly rate employee who wouldn't be in such a hurry to crush their fellow worker to death.

Time is money, like it or not.

......Texas saw 524 fatal workplace injuries last year, compared with 508 a year earlier, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That 3 percent increase was slightly higher than the growth of workplace fatalities nationwide (2 percent). The 2014 figures are preliminary, and the agency will revise them next spring.

The next highest death toll behind Texas was in more populous California, where 334 workers died last year.

Texas has led the nation in total workplace deaths in 11 of the past 14 years.......

......Texas, for instance, is the only U.S. state that does not require employers to carry workers' compensation insurance. Some companies offer private insurance instead, but last spring, state officials said at least a half-million workers are not covered at all......

When there is more construction, which there is in Texas, that means there are more possibilities for accidents. This is life. Welcome to it. We have greater economic growth and activity because we have less onerous regulations and burdens, which means more jobs, more opportunity.

Unions would destroy this.

one of those nasty regulations that business so wants to avoid

I don't speak legalese, but would not having workers comp insurance mean that businesses would have to pay any damages directly after/before lawsuits/settlements instead of passing those costs to an insurance group? If so, I'm not sure how workers would suffer more or less except for insurance companies potentially requiring higher standards of safety behavior to remain insured.

It seems like last time I was in Texas there was no lack of lawyers willing to take on workplace injury cases. About every other billboard and t.v. ad I saw was for one.

There were several complaints against the foreman for safety violations and carelessness. Apparently, he severely bruised the woman's leg with a backhoe a week before he killed her.

The foreman should be charged with negligent homicide.

So, how do we know that this wasn't employee error?

Before, or after the investigation?
