What Made Virginia Change Its Mind on Guns?

What Made Virginia Change Its Mind on Guns? - The New York Times

Attitudes about guns are shifting in the state amid demographic changes. In one State Senate district that flipped to Democratic control in November, guns were a key topic.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — Lisette Johnson had been a lifelong Republican. She became an activist on gun safety after she was shot by her estranged husband more than a decade ago, and she asked her Republican state senator for his backing on gun control bills.

“I thought everyone would be on board with this, like, what objection could they possibly have?” Ms. Johnson said. “But it became very clear that the people interested in this were not the people I had aligned myself with, who were Republicans.”[paywall]

Republican or not, getting shot by my estranged husband would certainly influence my opinion on guns.

Virginia didn't change its mind. The democrats now control the state. How long that lasts remains to be seen.

You'd think all these mass shootings would have an effect on gun laws. I don't know if the NY Times is right, but interesting if true.

Hmm... if she had been stabbed, beaten or run over by her estranged husband a decade ago would she be for knife, baseball bat or pick-up truck control? Somehow, I doubt it.
