Tennessee governor seeks to amend law honouring leader of Ku Klux Klan | US news | The Guardian

Nathan Bedford Forrest was leading Confederate general
Republican Bill Lee will introduce legislation regarding holiday

Tennesse governor Bill Lee will introduce legislation to amend a law requiring the state to honor Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general who went on to lead the Ku Klux Klan.

Lee’s office confirmed the Republican was working on the bill but did not provide further details.

Time to launder those robes, boys. The south will rise again! We'll fix those race-loving liberal northerners!

Geezus! They celebrate this as an official state holiday? Seriously?

Time for the white supremacists & ANTIFA to clash over bringing down that statue of notorious NBF.

I wouldn't be surprised at what goes on in the South. At notorious Andersonville Prison, I'll bet they gather at times to mourn the hanging of the camp commandant. Even in D.C., they likely meet to mourn the hangings of the Lincoln conspirators. Those Southerners have long memories. It will be a long time before they stop hating the north.

This is interesting

Per state law, the Tennessee governor is tasked with issuing proclamations for six separate days of special observation, three of which, including the July 13 Forrest Day, pertain to the Confederacy.

Lee — and governors who have come before him — are also required by state law to proclaim Jan. 19 as Robert E. Lee Day, honoring the commander of the Confederate Army, as well as June 3 Confederate Decoration Day, otherwise known as Confederate Memorial Day and the birthday of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Tennessee Nathan Bedford Forrest Day: Gov. Bill Lee signs proclamation
Perhaps they should reconsider the entire law?

Moving to repeal this law & perhaps remove NBF's statue from in front of the state house probably would start Charlottesville all over again. I think it's the right thing to do but in the south they would consider in a sacrilege. If anything, I'd wait until after the Nov election before starting on this.

I don't know the current status of the KKK but NBF is worshipped as a war leader in the South, a true hero to the Confediracy, The KKK was very big in the 1920s.

Tattered Robes: The State of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States

Despite a persistent ability to attract media attention, organized Ku Klux Klan groups are actually continuing a long-term trend of decline. They remain a collection of mostly small, disjointed groups that continually change in name and leadership. Down slightly from a year ago, there are currently just over thirty active Klan groups in the United States, most of them very small. However, the association of Klan members with criminal activity has remained consistent.

The long-term decline of Ku Klux Klan groups is due to several factors, including increasing societal rejection of what the Klan stands for; a growing perception by white supremacists that Klan groups are outdated; and competition with other white supremacist movements, from racist skinheads to white supremacist prison gangs, over the small pool of potential recruits. In recent years, one of the clearest signs of the declining state of Ku Klux Klan groups has been in their complete inability to maintain anything resembling stability.

It looks like they have problems competing with more recent neo-Nazi & other white supremacist groups. Good for them.
