Louisiana governor election: Republicans could lose a second red state governor's election - CNNPolitics

(CNN)It's down to the wire in Louisiana's gubernatorial runoff election. In the Saturday election, Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards is trying to hold on against Republican Eddie Rispone. It's the second election in a deep red state in as many weeks that's pitted local versus national factors.

History and polling suggest it's really close, though perhaps with the slightest edge to Edwards.

Trump did a great job getting Bevin elected in KY. Keep up the good work, Donald!

Interesting. I didn't know a Dem held the state chair.

Louisiana has gone back and forth between Republican and Democrats governors for a long time.

Louisiana was the first state to let former slave owners vote after the civil war.

The polls have closed and John Edwards, the Democrat, is ahead by 9300 votes. If he wins, he'd be smart to join Maine and Vermont in restoring voting rights to all inmates. Not just ex-felons, mind you, but current ones.

Admittedly, I have no idea how politically smart such a move would be in that state.

John Edwards has been declared the winner.

Trump flew to Louisiana to beg voters not to reelect Edwards. As in Kentucky, his value in getting out the vote isn't that great.

NYT has a nice presentation of the votes by parish. Similar dynamics compared to KY, though JBE is very conservative on abortion and guns.

It helps when Democrats run candidates that represent the views of the voters of their states, CDs, etc. Edwards expanded Medicaid and salvaged LA’s economy from Bobby Jindal.

I guarantee you LA voters, along with those in Midwestern states that Trump flipped, would have found Censure much more palatable than Impeachment.

It appears the Democrat won, but he was also the incumbent. How is LA a blue state now?

BOSSIER CITY, La. — President Trump urged Louisiana voters on Thursday to “send a message to the corrupt Democrats in Washington” by electing to governor the Republican nominee, Eddie Rispone, directly linking the impeachment inquiry to a state election that will test his clout in the Deep South.

Looks like they sent a message to his sorry corrupt butt instead.

While Trump will still win LA, this election proved just how important the African-American vote is to Democrats. Their early voting was huge. They were comfortable with a conservative Democrat. JBE proved himself to them on health care and the economy.

While JBE won by 40k overall, he won Orleans parish by 100k and East Baton Rouge parish by 50k. That was the election. That was African-American turnout. Every state’s elections are like its own little country.

With LA’s top-two primary, GOP Rispone pissed off a lot of GOP Abraham voters with his negative ads. That was also a factor. Abraham would have been tougher to beat imo. I want to view this as a positive for Democrats, not a negative for Trump.

Yep. I agree! Conner Lamb may be the prototype. He showed us how it's done.

Yeah, I agree. But the genie's out of the bottle, and let's face it - the evidence coming-out of the hearings shows the impeachment is deserved. And who knows? It may stimulate the Dem base in those states.
