2nd white man sentence in 2017 cross burning

I can see getting arrested, community service or a fine... but prison is a much bigger thing. Just seems over the top.

Maybe the thinking is that the general population of a prison in Mississippi will be able to make the point more directly. I wonder how many Aryan Brotherhood are in Parchman Farm?

First off, I don't believe in Hate Crimes... that is crap that devalues the harm done to others that do not meet the criteria for a Hate Crime but experience the same level of intimidation or violence.

a crime committed to intimidate a group is a hate crime

“When people violate the civil rights of others for the sole purpose of intimidation, specifically burning a cross as in this case, it terrorizes an entire community,” Sutphin said. “Mississippians shouldn’t have to fear for their safety within their own neighborhoods, and this case should send a strong message to those who threaten others based on race or color.”
