‘I agree with Trump,’ commissioner said in denial of $2,700 to pay for digital access to the Times for 70,000 library-card holders

A local government in Florida has blocked its library system from getting a digital subscription to the New York Times, dismissing the newspaper as “fake news” and as a challenge to US president Donald Trump.

At a meeting in Citrus county, a coastal area west of Orlando, several of the city’s five commissioners laughed as they explained why they did not want to approve the library’s request.

Communist propaganda should not be subsidized by the government.
 
I don't think we should allow this behavior to reflect on Florida.
 
Geezus - as long as it's not hate or other prosecutable speech, the commissioners should allow the People access.

So long as the New York times agrees to provide their paper of "record" for free, I agree with you. Otherwise this comes under expenditures and the library feels it can get superior content for the money, and I agree they can.

I don't subscribe to any newspaper. They are rather pointless in this day and age.

Some are. We have 3 local papers. The county paper only comes out twice a week and isn't much. There is a free weekly classified type newspaper that comes out that has been expanding their content steadily to include community events, obituaries, local feel-good stories. The city newspaper is a 7 day a week traditional newspaper that is just hemorrhaging due in no small part to just horrible mismanagement. If you ask 5 subscribers what they pay a month, you will probably get 5 different answers. Their ad prices have gone through the roof. A lot of people cannot even afford obituaries any more because they are around $500/day. All the while they have built a high garden wall around their website and then charge as much for digital advertising on a site fewer and fewer people can get to as they do for print advertising. They jacked my rates up over 50% in one month, offered to lower it to about 40% more for a limited timed which was best they could do so I said cancel it at which point they offered me a great deal at 20% more claiming it was the same thing I had been paying. I told them to pound sand.
