Florida Senate approves bill allowing armed teachers | TheHill

The Florida state Senate on Tuesday approved a bill that would permit teachers to carry firearms on school grounds if local school boards agree to allow staffers to carry their firearms.

The Senate voted 22-17, mostly along party lines, to approve the bill, setting up a vote in the state House.

Not surprising in a 'stand your ground' state like FL. But in a tense 'active shooter' situation, do we need more civilians with hand guns? Nervous SWAT teams will hardly be able to tell the good guys from the active shooter(s). Anyone with a weapon not in police uniform will automatically become a target. The end result will only be more casualties.

But the "No Gun Zone" signs have been so effective!

Just what we need are more guns in the school. Republicans and the NRA like dead kids

If the armed teacher's role is a last chance defense it can help. I'm a little wary of having them roving the halls hunting the shoot while swat is on scene. Knowing that armed resistance is possible MAY act as a deterrent.

Arming civilians in an active shooter environment will only add to the body count. A neighbor couple are teachers & they are appalled by this idea. This is not why they became teachers.

I’m not against armed teachers in schools assuming they have had proper training for an active shooter type situation.

But can you imagine the outcry if an armed teacher during an active shooter situation shoots and kills an innocent kid (i.e. not the gunman)? I am pro gun rights, but if that situation were to ever happen, I think even I would be against guns in schools at that point.

Mind blowing.

Parents need to hit the election booths.

Yes. We need more politicians who believe that teachers should be able to choose for themselves whether or not they wish to be armed.

I agree. Training and proper safeguards/procedures are essential. I'm not even sure teachers can be trained and maintain their qualifications to search or confront the shooter in an open scenario. I see them as a last, desperate attempt to save lives.

Well, of coures we do.

After all, we want to live like animals.

All this modern living... time to return to the past.

Like the dolt teacher with his gun in school that went of in Alabama.

We will have way more teachers killing kids and accidents than lives saved. It's freakin common sense 101.

Yes, I can imagine such a horrible situation. Personally, I hope I never see it.

While we're imagining things, can you imagine how a gun-owning teacher would feel if he/she was prevented from stopping an armed agressor who was in the act of methodically murdering students, solely because a state law banned them from carrying on school property? I hope I never see this event either.

Sorry, I disagree. When a shooter enters a classroom, I'd prefer that a trained gun carrying adult was there to make the shooter's day a little tougher. It may not save many, but I'll take any we can get.

You'll never find numbers to to support your well intended want.

I don't think you understand what the teachers are supposed to do in an active shooter situation. Since I have been through the training, and have trained at one of the leading organizations when it comes to formulating responses to active shooters in a school environment, I will inform you.

In most active shooting situations in schools, most of the students are in various classrooms. When an active shooter is detected, teachers are expected to barricade their classrooms. Armed teachers would be responsible for maintaining the barricade. They are not expected to go out in the halls, searching for an active shooter. Rather, they guard the entry to their classroom. Someone trying to force their way into a barricaded classroom is almost always a hostile and almost always easily identified.

Now in some cases, active shooters have pulled fire alarms and in that case, armed teachers might not be as effective. But the vast majority of shootings have involved the active shooter going from room to room. That was true in VT, Columbine, Sandyhook and others.

That is both a lie and makes no sense. The people who want dead kids are those who want to use the blood of innocents to push their hateful jihad against gun ownership. Dead children from gunshot violence does not help the NRA or the GOP. It only helps the gun banning movement.

Arming civilians in an active shooter environment will only add to the body count. A neighbor couple are teachers & they are appalled by this idea. This is not why they became teachers.

Speculation based on a want of knowledge. I guess they became teachers so they can cower in their classrooms while some nutcase kills them and the children they teach?

But the "No Gun Zone" signs have been so effective!

Especially when combined with trained and dedicated school police (resource?) officers who wait outside until the shooter finishes. Parkland had the ideal school security system - look it up.

What has happened every time an active shooter has faced armed resistance?

Are there any arguments against this that don’t amount to “guns are scary”? Any, at all?

Nonsense. When a non criminal hears, "police, drop your weapon" they drop it. If the person is taking a shot at the shooter, take the shot it's worth your ass (and cops ain't great shots, you'll probably live).
