“Congresswoman Martha Roby (R-Ala.) is sponsoring HR 205, The Geometric Simplification Act, declaring the Euclidean mathematical constant of pi to be precisely 3. The bill comes in response to data and rankings from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, rating the United States’ 15 year-olds 25th in the world in mathematics.”
the only good thing about this simplification of the pi standard is that it did not originate in NC

It did start in Alabama...... I will leave it to others to judge.

No chance this "news" has anything to do with the date, right?

Not Florida.

Needless to say, this story is not true. There is no such bill.

It actually preceded April 1st by a week, but it is definitely an attempt to fool people.

This news is a little old, nine years old to be exact. March 21, 2011.

Y’all laugh but Japan taught pi as 3 for a number of years. Definitely a bad idea

If it were would we ever be able to put a probe or ship anywhere near a planet ever again???

Red:
WTF? Someone has decided that mathematical constants' value can be declared!?! Are you effing kidding me? WTF is the woman's rationale for "declaring" pi to equal 3?

Surely this is an April Fool's thing? It's hard to say, however, because GOP-ers routinely say/think/believe some really stupid things. This could well yet another one of them.

There is nothing good about it. I memorized the multiplication tables and learned how to figure percentages and fractions in the third grade. And while advanced math is not in my wheelhouse of aptitude, I will put my general math skills up against anybody.

I doubt seriously all the countries who are scoring better in math than our kids are altering data or making something wrong a standard just to make it easier for their kids. I always take Huffpo reporting with a grain of salt since they are one of the guilty promoting or misrepresenting the facts for political purposes, but if this is being reported accurately and without omitting pertinent facts, I certainly hope most of our congress people are smart enough to vote it down.
