VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Google says it will string a trans-Atlantic cable from France to Virginia.
The web giant said in a statement this week that the undersea cable will land stateside in Virginia Beach. It's expected to become operational in 2020.
Google said the project will better serve customers with an expanded network. Internet traffic across the Atlantic is among the busiest.
The cable will also support growth of Google Cloud. And it will land in relative proximity to Google's planned data center in northern Virginia.
Good news for Virginia!

The demand for bandwidth is going up, and technology to carry that bandwidth is improving.
If google is running their own cable, it can only mean that they think having their own cable will be cheaper
than renting services from someone else, (possibly a competitor).
I agree it is good news for Virginia, at least some, Construction jobs, and likely a network operations center,
to monitor the cable.

There are undersea cables that go into operation every year.

MAREA is one that goes into service this year, connecting The US and Spain.

Not sure why this cable is good news for Virginia...considering information travels at the speed of light, it’s kind of irrelevant where the termination of the cable is.

I expect he means the data center

Generally distance and jumps matter, a lot in certain contexts. SOL is fast, but it's entirely noticeable when we're talking long haul digital signals, and the expectation that things are instantaneous(For feedback, simultaneously things, etc.)

You mean the five guys who are employed there?

Fantastic news for those five guys. In Virginia.

I expect some money from property and business taxes as well. But yes, ongoing employment would be low

One of numerous reasons why I love being a member here - I learn something new every time I log on.

That's a cool map. I had no idea there were that many submarine telecom cables. Thanks for posting this.
