I have purchased all of my firearms in the state of Virginia. When the dealer paces the call, I always ask what information the state is receiving. I have always been told that the state only knows I am purchasing a firearm and not the type or serial #. Anyone able to verify this or debunk it?

They report the serial number and type.

This is true.

if that is the case, how is that not registration?

Because the seller doesn't report to the government that "Rexedgar purchased Brand X firearm, serial# 123456", nor does the government retain any of that information.

The only way for the government to know what gun you purchased is to go to the shop and look through the seller's paperwork on the sell, with a warrant, of course.

in ohio they only are told if its long gun or hand gun for age compliance

however, the 4473 form contains the firearm, its maker type and Serial Number and the brady check confirmation. When the Instant check gives the clerk a Proceed, the instant check center gives a code that is linked to that 4473. That is how the ATF can make sure that the Dealer has complied with the Brady Law.

The dealer call the FBI - NICS. They give your name , Date of Birth and social security number. The person at NICS will say if the dealer can or cannot sell you the weapon.

The person at NICS will give the dealer a number / code............... and the dealer writes that code at the top of the "4473". Unless they amended the law --- PER LAW == NICS is not to keep / retain the info the dealer gives them.

If the FFL dealer lies to you, he can lose his license.
