Who in your opinion will be the winner?
Regardless the talking heads will be dicing the results.

I correctly called 2016 for Trump, but this is too close to call for me.

I think it comes to turnout, low statewide turnout and Gillespie wins, average to high and Northram narrowly carries

I am thinking the same. I believe that ridiculous ad likely pissed off enough people to fire up Gillespie voters. The recent condemnation of Northram as a racist for his sanctuary city remarks could suppress some of his. Had neither happened I think Northram wins easily, but the last week or so has been pretty bad for him.

Not at all surprising. More than half of the state population is not native, filled mostly by federal employees, contractors and lobbyists in NoVa. VA will be blue/purple for a long time.

Nate Silver said something that was pretty reasonable: "I don't buy the talking point that tonight's results only prove that Virginia's become a really blue state. It's probably more accurate to say this is how a blue-leaning state behaves in a really blue national environment. Dems are getting solid results everywhere tonight."

Also true. I've been here for many decades and the X-burbs for Washington DC now stretch past Fredericksburg. Either way, though, this is a pro-big government state pretty much everywhere but rural with the lions share of income tax revenues coming from federal salaries.

The bigger story is that the Democrats will likely take the VA house of Delegates, moving the state more heavily blue. They could pick up 18 seats.

    Thus dies the complacent party.
