North Carolina’s General Assembly voted Wednesday to block cities and counties from passing protections against LGBT discrimination in a wide-ranging bill that could have enormous implications for the state.HB 2, which passed in a special session, would set a statewide anti-discrimination policy, banning employers and businesses from discriminating against employees or customers based on their race, color, country of origin, religion, age or “biological sex.” The bill offers no protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and prevents local governments from passing any nondiscrimination policy that goes beyond the statewide standard.
The bill also pre-empts local employment ordinances governing wages, benefits, employee protections and leave policies. It would prevent schools from allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.
The measure passed 83-25 in the House of Representatives, and 32-0 in the state Senate. (Senate Democrats walked out of the chamber before the vote.)
Gov. Pat McCrory (R) said he signed the bill Wednesday night.

The bill would also end anti-discrimination protections for veterans. At least two North Carolina jurisdictions — Greensboro and Orange County — have anti-discrimination ordinances in place banning bias based on military or veteran status. Under the new measure, cities and counties would be prohibited from passing protections for veterans or service members.

Not only does this block/repeal anti-discrimination laws for the LGBTQ community but also blocks/repeals anti-discrimination laws for veterans! This bill is ridiculous. A huge step backwards.

yeah it actually undoes 50 years of employment protections in various cities. It is a heinously anti gay law that was introduced, "debated," and passed within 10 hours hoping no one would notice. The language attempts to circumvent roper vs evans and pretend there's no animus involved, but that's a complete lie.

Hopefully this will lead to a long overdue victory in the federal courts, since the goddamn politicians including hillary/sanders are not even mentioning this discrimination in state after state by conservative zealots. Last week it was georgia, before that arizona, indiana, and michigan. Time for some grassroots protests and boycotts i guess since that worked in those states

Yep! The GOP is all about "small government" and "freedom"...as long as it's only for what they support. But when it comes to a city voting for and passing laws that apply only within that city, the GOP loves using the power of Big Government to impose their will on the people of that city.

I bet the gov was wearing one of those little American Flag pins on his coat lapel when he signed this bill. You know, because he and the GOP is big on supporting the troops and Vets. (sarcasm off)

Anyway the GOP just keeps on committing suicide.

Could you point out the part where this law repeals anti-discrimination laws??

Yes. Its a preemption law.

"The General Assembly declares that the regulation of discriminatory practices in
33 employment is properly an issue of general, statewide concern, such that this Article and other
34 applicable provisions of the General Statutes supersede and preempt any ordinance, regulation,
35 resolution, or policy adopted or imposed by a unit of local government or other political
36 subdivision of the State that regulates or imposes any requirement upon an employer pertaining to
37 the regulation of discriminatory practices in employment, except such regulations applicable to
38 personnel employed by that body that are not otherwise in conflict with State law."

"The General Assembly declares that the regulation of discriminatory practices in places
13 of public accommodation is properly an issue of general, statewide concern, such that this Article
14 and other applicable provisions of the General Statutes supersede and preempt any ordinance,
15 regulation, resolution, or policy adopted or imposed by a unit of local government or other
16 political subdivision of the State that regulates or imposes any requirement pertaining to the
17 regulation of discriminatory practices in places of public accommodation"

as you are an admitted fan of big government, to denounce this on that basis makes you a hypocrite.

Somebody who knows more about this please answer something for me as I am not in North Carolina nor do I follow the LGBT issues:

is the controversy here the idea that a person should use the public restroom based on the biological elimination equipment one has to expel urine from their own body?

Is that what this is about?

I actually have no problem with this section...at least i don't find it evil that a State would declare state law to be supreme over local or municipal law regarding a topic.

I understand many folks need a law listing all hte protected groups that can't be discriminated against, but i'm not one of them..... in light of so many folks needing written protections, I wouldn't complan if they did provide for written protections at the state level.
I would suggest they remove protection for veterans though... veteran status is not the same as sex, race, creed, or gender..... those things can't be helped, veteran status is a voluntary choice.

no that is merely their excuse, only 1 part of the law they passed. They used that as their cover story to pass a very broad anti gay law, one of the most heinous anywhere in a decade

this was specifically to empower the bigots of the state to discriminate against minorities, nothing more

oh really, well neither is sexuality. The discrimination is by way of protecting certain groups but not others, and of course it's the ones they dislike the most that don't get protected

by protecting LGBT people, you mean letting anyone who claims he's a woman stalk the girl's restroom.

Yep, those good ol' boys in the NC state legislature didn't want none of those guys like the one in this picture going into women's restrooms

This is a photo of JP Sheffield, he was born as a woman. Seems those good ol' boys could only think that it was those pervert guys who are transgender.

Aren't they gonna have fun when Mr Sheffield is arrested for being a man in the ladies room and it turns out that is what their discriminatory bill has caused.

Can you answer my question?

while its stupid to discriminate against people based on what their sexual preferences are, this is not promoting more government. Its about preventing cities from imposing laws on private actors

That's what I get from this... Since we started passing laws that state you are whatever gender you decide you are and can use whatever restroom/dressing room/locker room you want, we have started seeing incidents where people have been using this as an excuse to openly "peek" at naked people of teh opposite sex, regardless of whether or not those people are OK with that. The classic liberal mistake of the Law of Unintended Consequences rears it's ugly head and when the NC legislature tries to take pro-active action, they are accused of being anti-homosexual, when in fact they are being anti-pervert.

Provide the curious with links to news stories about these common occurrences. In the meantime, why not say something about my earlier post: Would you want Mr Sheffield to walk into the Ladies room when your wife was in there?

they can still go into the men's room as long as their BC says man.
they can legally get it changed according to the bill.

what it does do is allow businesses to keep men from entering the women's bathroom simply because that minute they
feel like a women.

however it does more than that as well. so it isn't just about bathrooms like people are making this out to be.

Pervert? Are you referring to Gays, Lesbian, Transgender?

Here's a link to the bill as passed in North Carolina - show us where it says anything about obtaining a new gender identification in one's birth certificate

The law already exists:

N.C. Gen. Stat. § 130A-118(b)(4), (e) (2005).

(b) A new certificate of birth shall be made by the State Registrar when . . .

(4) A written request from an individual is received by the State Registrar to change the sex on that individual's birth record because of sex reassignment surgery, if the request is accompanied by a notarized statement from the physician who performed the sex reassignment surgery or from a physician licensed to practice medicine who has examined the individual and can certify that the person has undergone sex reassignment surgery.
