North Carolina Governor Signs Bill Banning Cities From Protecting LGBT People

Ahhh, we've been to VB many, many times for vacation. We love it. IMO the nicest beach on the east coast. We've been talking about going down there again this year. We usually take 3-4 vacas every year, that might be one of them this year. It is a favorite of ours. Hilton-Head has really nice beaches too though.

Please, stay out of the ladies rooms though. ;)

Too much trouble on the sidewalks now. After 6 PM...it's a war zone. I only go there in the winter when it's empty, or pass by it in my boat when I am Striper fishing.

We go to the beaches in the morning, to early afternoon.. Then some shopping. Then we're back at the hotel by 4-5pm. Last time we were there was 2 years ago, and we heard a lot of talk about the troubles, and fighting and problems in some parts of the main street of the beach, and the night spots. And what needed to be done, etc.. I guess they didn't do anything huh?

But like I said, it didn't concern us, we're back at the hotel by 5pm. I'm sitting at the hotel bar and drinking by 5:15pm.

This period in American history is going to go down as one of the most ignorant and bigotted eras, similar to the Civil Rights period.

I personally do not wish to be remembered as part of a majority population that was ignorant at best and malicious at worst. The continued attempts at influence of the fundamentalist religious, esp. Christians, is a related and also obvious regression in humanity, compassion, and critical thinking.

It's really an embarrassment, including to my religion, Christianity.

Yeah...that will work. Where did you stay? If you want to do a little crabbing, gimme a call, my new crabbing skiff will be finished soon if I get off my butt.

I'm not sure we're even going yet. I'll let you know if we go. If not crabbing, at least we can do some drinking. 5 times we stayed at hotels right on the strip. Twice we stayed at a suites in Lake Wright about 10-15 mins. off the beach. We waited too long and the hotels on the strip were booked. But the Quality Suites at Lake Wright was a easy drive to the beach, and a nice hotel. So no complaints. Plus it's RIGHT on a golf course. Very nice. But the beach front hotels were great too. Beautiful waking up and seeing a sunrise over the water.

The course is closed now. Sad to see it go. That was a hot spot for golfers who played for money.......and I lost and won my share over the years. They are going to build a shopping mall there soon.

It's closed for GOOD? Wow, it always seemed busy when we were there. But, golf courses are expensive to keep up. I often wonder how they make money here up north. They closed 4-5 months out of the year. The got to make their money in that 6 month or so window.

Anyway that's too bad. If we go and stay at that hotel this year I guess I won't bring my clubs.

Bring em. I can get you a Tee-time anywhere at the beach. I used to build/repair clubs for a lot of the pro's.

surely you have proof of this opinion?... or is proof not required to make such claims anymore?

that's true, sexuality is innate as well...as for protection, i dunno.. maybe folks need to consider why protections are deemed "necessary', and if it's actaulyl a valid necessity.

but as for this particular topic, I don't mind the state taking supremacy over local/municipal statutes on issues such as discrimination...

it's necessary for the same reason my gay uncle married a woman. He had been in the job for 2 years and then his new boss was a huge homophobe who kept prying into his private life

it's necessary because they've done studies revealing that the gay candidate will be passed over about 40% more often

as for it being valid, it harms the business not at all to hire the more or equally qualified gay candidate. They lose nothing and it all comes down to catering to prejudiced assholes

and proof really, come up with a reason other than bigotry to explain how race, gender, religion, height etc etc are all protected by law but not sexuality. It's always the most homophobic states and counties where this is true. Just look at a map

the state should never take supremacy over the reasonable values of a community, especially when a big city like charlotte gets like 1/10 the representation in state government that it should. All across the country rural areas account for about 50% of population yet hold 70-80% of the state legislature. That's what is prevailing here - small town ignorance dictating to big cities that have actual things going for them

No, that's not the other words. I'm saying the very definition of anti-discrimination laws is big government. It's literally the government telling private establishments how to run things. The absence of such laws is not big government, it's literally the government staying out of the way.

That's my sole point.

-edit- It actually looks like it's both.

The part of the bill that bans people from using bathrooms that are different than their biological sex is big government. The part prohibiting various cities from implementing various anti-discrimination laws is not.

actually no, in most cases the anti discrimination laws are by voter ballot. North carolina has had this happen about a dozen times over a 50 year period and the state government came and bullied aside their values to not discriminate

And this is the party that wants to send the gestapo into bedrooms and you expect me to believe the motive here is to minimize government intrusion? Hah! Why didn't they repeal the race and gender anti discrimination laws too then? This is about anti gay fundamentalism only

Ending anti-discrimination laws is a step forward, not backwards. Telling people they have ignore their will and trade or allow people to use their property is a violation of property and of association rights. I have no problem ending laws that violate the rights of the citizens.

white hetero christian males are the last opinions i care about when it comes to this subject

Did cities have protections for others prior to this bill passing?
Did this bill remove a Cities right to do?

Yes, they kept the protections for gender, race, and various other characteristics. They just hate lgbt more it seems

Shouldn't you include cisgender in there somewhere?

But many FTM only have the upper body surgery. They look like a male, but don't have the equipment. They would be required to go into the womens restroom since they are not able to get a revised BC until after full reassignment surgery.

That appears to be correct, the way I read the current law, but who knows what would or would not be deemed in compliance with such a law.

Per the law it say biological sex. So a FTM would have to use the female bathroom even if he looked like Buck Angel.

I live in Virginia Beach and I am going to self identify myself as a female. Tourist season is almost here, and the oceanfront female restrooms will be full of game.

You realize harassment can be illegal right? There are already laws protecting people from being spied on, harassed (to a certain extent), and sexually assaulted.

Are you telling me that I cannot self identify my sexual identification? All I need is a wig, and I "poof" into a tranny.

No one said you couldn't. I'm saying what exactly do you imagine it would get you access to? It's a public bathroom. This means separate stalls with doors. You won't see anything more than you would see on the beach itself.

Maybe not. First, the part of the new law that added the word "biological" to the already protected class "sex" will probably not survive legal challenges. Second, your mixing the laws above - once a person undergoes SRS then they can get their birth certificate reissued with the correct sex listed for them, and the term you're questioning is in the new law and not he old one that has been around for years. Once the birth certificate is changed, they can use the bathroom that coincides with their gender identity.

There are many laws on this. Not every state allows you to change your birth certificate (Tennessee is one). And some states require the full surgery which isn't what everyone goes through. This means that a transgender man can get to looking like those pictured without having a penis.

True. No argument, however, I was talking about the NC General Statute that I quoted earlier in the thread that wolfsgirl asked me about which eventually lead to the post you quoted.

yeah!... so we should discriminate against the rich and powerful and protect the poor and powerless!!

that's the problem in a nutshell..... when you start down the road of anti-discrimination as we do, it simply turns into a battle of who to discriminate against, and who to protect.....and ot make it worse, it all ends up being partisan.
Republicans end up looking like they hate the poor and minorities.. democrats end up looking like they hate the rich and whites....
on this particular matter, I don't blame the politicians... I blame their bases... discrimination is what they want, and their vote is the currency they trade for it.

Problem is, YOUR solution results in the many becoming part of a permanent underclass, whereas MY solution brought us out of Jim Crow, into the modern nation we are today where (in most of America) interracial marriage is no big deal, having lots of friends from different ethnicities is not unusual.

Have you lived in segregation? I have. I remember walking down the street in Shaw, MS, where I graduated high school, seeing the ONLY doctor's office in town. The office had two doors, with the receptionist's office in the middle. Above each door were words chiseled in marble - one said "WHITE" and the other said "COLORED". The fact that they were completely painted over in Kelly green didn't help much when the chiseled words were a freaking inch deep. And yeah, the people obeyed the signs - and that's how it was.

The killer is that this was in 1984 - twenty freaking years AFTER passage of the Civil Rights Act, and I was home on leave from the Navy. If I'd had half a brain at the time, I would have called Time Magazine. But I was still racist at the time - and that's "just the way things were there."

I also went to a segregated school in the next county over, called Indianola Academy, for one year. It was a completely white school, and while it's had perhaps five black students total since I attended in 1976, Google it today and you can see for yourself that it's an all-white school now...in a county that's 71% black.

This is all in the MS Delta...where to this day I have yet to see an interracial marriage. Not because the blacks would refuse to marry whites, but because any white that dared to do so would be ostracized by his or her family. Maybe there are some...but I haven't seen one yet.

So that's the kind of world YOU want to live in. Thank you very much sir, but I've already lived in such a world, and it sucks. The ONLY people who support what you want are either completely ignorant of what it does a society (which I've seen first-hand, remember)...or are racist (which I was at one time, remember). In other words, one of us knows from hard-won experience what he's talking about...and it ain't you.
