The WV Republican Party will once again require a loyalty oath from any candidate who wants to run in the primary.

The oath states the candidate will support whoever ultimately wins the Republican nomination.

It's not a new thing, it's happened before. (last election: Virginia GOP Will Require Primary Voters To Sign Party Loyalty Oath | ThinkProgress )

This is intended to prevent candidates (like Trump) from jumping ship and going independent, or supporting anyone who does.

Thoughts?

You probably need to read your article again.

This is about VA, not WV.

The article is about requiring VOTERS to sign the loyalty oath...not the candidates.

In any event, this is one reason why I don't follow the herd and why I'm not a member of any Party.

Party above country. Nothing new.

State GOP leaders plot to tie Donald Trump’s hands

[...]

The Virginia and North Carolina parties are in discussions about implementing a new requirement for candidates to qualify for their primary ballots: that they pledge to support the Republican presidential nominee — and not run as a third-party candidate — in the general election.

The procedural moves are clearly aimed at Trump, who pointedly refused to rule out a third-party run during the first GOP debate.

They are also thinking about requiring candidates to swear an oath before they allow them on the ballot.

I actually read this article earlier today so I knew what the OP was talking about even if his post didn't talk about the same thing.

Now...I don't really care about the Party in-fighting that goes on, so what these States do because they don't like Trump doesn't matter. But I was kind of amused at something that Mr. Cuccinelli mentioned.

Cuccinelli also noted that Virginia’s existing “sore-loser law” would prevent any candidate who lost a primary from mounting a third-party bid afterwards.

If VA already has this law on the books, why do they need to make another rule? Isn't the existing law good enough?

It's unenforceable.

What are they going to do to anyone who violates the pledge? Kick them out of the party?

No, it's WV. I heard it on ABC News tonight. I may have posted the wrong link about the last-election stuff, but yeah... you get the point.

You can no longer "change your mind" once you decide to become a Republican, right? ;)

As far as I know you don't have to register with a party in Virginia, so a loyalty oath is useless.

You both need to read better, it's from 2012, not 2015. ROFLMAO! Jon Huntsman isn't running this time.

Your link shows the current consideration of doing what the OP is talking about in VA and NC, but his link is to a 2012 article.

And? (Not sure how you think your comment is relevant.)
You do understand that what I provided was in reference to what another poster said, correct? You do also understand what I provided is what was currently reported, right?
Which is pretty relevant to the here and now and the OP's angle of "(like Trump)".

Have you been following this angle?
There were rumors that the GOP[SUP]e[/SUP] was thinking of demanding such from Trump or he would be banned from upcoming debates.

Recently the NCGOP denied such rumors.
So that leaves VA, and perhaps WV if what the OP says he heard is correct.

Likely it is all just rumors but, it is what was reported.

What's going on is you have these State Party bigwigs who are probably beholden to Bush and who feel threatened by Trump's popularity. So they are brainstorming ways of roping Trump in. This loyalty oath thing is one of their bright ideas.

Whether they actually implement this idea is another matter, though. They run the very real risk of pissing off their Party members who actually LIKE Trump. I'm not so sure they'll follow through, but if they do...it very well could backfire and smack them in the ass.

Doesn't sound legal to me. Those responsible for the oath need to be in a cell.

If the party establishment screws Trump out of the nomination, he should run as a third party candidate and take lots of supporters along with him. That is the only way to teach the GOP elders that they cannot do such nonsense without the direst of consequences.

i am sure that would be your dream, since you want the GOP divided.

The GOP has been the enemy of the American people for a very long time. They need to fall and then be remembered as a footnote in history... sort of like the KKK.

What law do you suppose the Republican Party might have violated with a loyalty oath?

Before you answer that, though, keep in mind that the Republican Party is a private organization.

Oh...I get it...

You just don't like the Republican Party.

You are dismissed.

i can already see by your few postings, you are the kind of person who is divided right down party lines, and thinks everything the GOP does is wrong, and the DNC is saving america.

both parties stink

No, they are not. Public office and those who hold it are NOT PRIVATE.

I do not believe the DNC is saving America. I believe the right-wing is an obstructionist, religiously-owned party of bigots.

While they are both bad in their way ... the right is the only party that seeks to make discrimination and mistreatment of employees legal for business owners. Likewise, the right-wing seeks to make it legal for business owners to use religious nonesense as a reason to deny services and otherwise discriminate.

Guess what?

FEDERAL LAW MAKES THIS BEHAVIOR ILLEGAL.
