Legalise sex toys and pornography to cut rape, says Thai MP | South China Morning Post

-About 30,000 rape cases are reported in Thailand every year, according to Pheu Thai Plus think tank’s secretary
-Prison terms aren’t working, he says, but giving a release to sexual urges might. However, a women’s group has dismissed his call as ‘irrelevant’

A Thai MP has proposed legalising sex toys and pornography as a way to cut rape offences and other sexual assaults. Treerat Sirichantaropas, a spokesman for a committee tasked with combating rape, said in a Facebook post on Monday he believed legalising pornography and sex toys would help to cut the number of sexual assault cases reported in the country.

Treerat, who is also secretary of the Pheu Thai Plus think tank, said about 30,000 rape cases were reported every year, the majority of them filed by victims aged between 15 and 19 years.

I prefer sweet young things myself but rape is not my thing. I prefer being approached by a legal-aged woman who wants sex. It's happened to me once before, so it's not a day dream.

Is there any science to back this up?

Is this simply a thread about your sexual perversions? You have nothing better to contribute? sad

Men are not driven to rape women because they do not get to look at pornography. That is inane.

My word isn't good enough for you? I was staying in a hotel in Durham, NC on a business trip. While sitting in the bar I noticed the TV sportscaster the late Howard Cosell at the bar. He was in town to cover a Duke basketball game the next day. Having lived in the same town & gone to the same high school as his daughter, I went over & introduced myself. Back at my table, this stunningly attractive woman (former Broadway dancer) comes over to my table & asks for my room number. She knocked on my door & I wound up spending that night & the weekend with her. That's too odd a story to make up. But great sex. She was the former mistress of a big time B'way choreographer.

if you don't believe my story, drop it because it's not worth my time to argue with you. It happened. I had similar encounters twice more, once in Burlington, VT & once in Baltimore, OH. Those happened, too. If you're single & travel for a living, it's a fringe benefit.

The lady in VT sent a big vase of flowers to my office the next day. I should have been embarassed but the married guys I worked with were jealous.

There actually is evidence to suggest legalization of sexually explicit materials has decreased sexual crimes however, I would say it’s extremely hard to tell if it’s simply correlation or causative as it probably needs more study but I can’t link it right now, but there is stuff out there to suggest it’s at least part of a reduction, better education I think would be another thing high up on that list.

I actually agree with this logic. Growing up if I didn't have avenues for my sexual appetite like porn I might of very well done something awful. In a way I think porn offered a great release for me and kept my desires at bay so I wasn't attacking females. My desires were scary and nightmarish as a teen, I literally would of gone crazy without that release. Even my wife says she doesn't know how I made it before her being single with how my hormones can get.

So I agree porn does help reduce violence toward women in my opinion.

That doesn't make sense. Increasing one's appetite would make a man more desperate. Every woman has her special "secret sauce" in the bedroom. No man is going to discover her "secret sauce" by putting her under duress. By "secret sauce", I mean some unique position, approach, fetish, technique, etc. That's the real joy of meeting a new sex partner.

Rape isn't about sex as much as it's about power.

I'm going to be devil's advocate and say there seems to be more evidence the other way around. I don't agree with the methods and sample sizes. I can't find the Harvard study that really bothered me (regarding methods and sample size) but this article has a decent list of references if anyone wants to check on it Does Porn Really Decrease Rates of Sexual Assault? There are some voices on this topic that I don't think can be trusted to give an unbiased take on the issue.

From what I can gather there has been this assumption that allowing more access to porn would lower sex violence and I think the idea there is limiting access as a form of outlet makes the problem stew. But it seems real research using any methods is relatively new and I think the jury is still out on what the real impact is. I haven't strongly taken a side on this because I think we need more data.

My guess is the factors that increase and decrease violence are different than just access to pornography. I think male to female ratios, likelihood to get caught (which is proven as a bigger deterrent than the punishment), and social norms (even if criminal it is undeniable it is insanely higher in some regions of the world than others).

I also think there are some people that need reliable, regular, affordable/free, access, to mental healthcare. Porn or not.

However, assuming those studies are true, that pornography is linked to more violence - it seems that banning pornography wouldn't help, just certain types of pornography that normalize violence.
