She's 7 and was born intersex. Why her parents elected to let her grow up without surgical intervention

Seven-year-old Rosie Lohman loves arts and crafts (especially any involving glitter), currently wants to be a DJ when she grows up, and happens to have been born intersex.

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe people born with bodies that are perceived as differing from typical "male" and "female" categories.
She had two X chromosomes, so doctors considered her female, but she had external anatomy that appeared more traditionally male.
"It was me who noticed," her father, Eric Lohman, said. "The nurse picked her up and showed her to us and I saw her body right away and noticed that she had what looked like a small penis."

"I knew that surgeries were common for intersex kids, but I didn't really understand how it would work," Eric said. "And so, my fear at the time was that they were going to take Rosie out of the room, and they were going to suggest doing the surgery" right away.

Rosie's mother, Stephani Lohman, said she felt extremely pressured by the surgeons to consent to surgery even after she voiced her concerns about the procedure, including the evidence that these surgeries can have devastating side effects including a loss of sexual function, psychological trauma and life-long pain.

That was wrong for them to pressure them. Circumcision and intersex surgeries should be illegal. I have read testimonies from intersex adults and some of them wish their parents didn't consent to the surgeries because they felt more of the opposite sex than the doctors and parents decided.

Their gender identities and bodies should be left intact until they're old enough to make decisions.

Do you mean illegal period, or illegal to do on minors, or at least till they can show informed consent?

Illegal to do on minors.

Illegal to do on minors.
Would you be willing to allow a mid to late teen if they can demonstrate informed consent?

Maybe with parent's consent.

Personally, I'm rather thankful my parents opted for circumcision before I was old enough to remember it. I know guys who have had it done later in live and it's....unpleasant.

This would be more convincing if you also opposed "gender transitioning" for minors.

Don't bring that here. Keep that to the other thread.

Most intersex people are what used to be called "pseudo-hermaphrodites". They objectively belong to one sex or the other, but are deformed. A rarer condition is "true hermaphroditism", which is a type of chimerism in which a person has two sets of DNA (with opposite biological sex) and consequently has two sets of genitalia.

It may make sense to ban cosmetic surgery for true hermaphrodite children, since their sex may be legitimately ambiguous. But with modern genetic science, I don't see the issue in other cases, as long as the surgical intervention follows biological reality.

Some children are born with anatomical genitalia that is non-conforming to tradition male/female genitalia. Years ago, these children were assigned a gender for their entire lives by the doctor who delivered them. The mythological term “hermaphrodite” implies that a person is both fully male and fully female. This is a physiologic impossibility. Now with genetic testing, sex can finally be confirmed and children's identity is firmly established as to their natural sex. Usually an elongated clitoris can be mistaken for a penis and gender assigned as 'male' when in fact the child has two 'X' chromosomes designating them anatomically female. The exterior sexual characteristics can't be used to determine the true biological sex of an infant.

It makes more senses psychologically to wait until this girl decides for herself whether to have the corrective surgery or not.

I'd support 16 or older when they understand the difference between gender and gender identity. They do not need their parent's consent because some parents might not approve of this surgery or their gender identification.

Any surgeon who pressures a parent to perform this on an infant should lose their medical license.

Gender surgery isn't performed on children. They need to be 17or 18 in the US before they have the gender confirmation surgery.

I am all for the parent having the ability to refuse any procedure that's not for life threating conditions. Once a legal adult, the individual can decide for themselves. Abortion would be the exception under certain conditions.

Why are the parents violating their child's privacy in this way?

I was saying that about children with gender dysphoria, and you disagreed. A pre-teen child is not old enough to decide they need to change their gender. They don't even know what gender means at that age. And they don't understand the risks of drugs and hormones.

Different subject, I know, but maybe you can see the similarity.

Yes, he is contradicting himself.

Uh .. why? You have contradicted yourself. Intersex kids are too young to make this decision, but it's ok for gender dysphoric kids?

Nobody is trying to change the transgender children.

When they UNDERSTAND???? You didn't care about that when talking about gender dysphoria! Children DO NOT understand gender or gender identity. They can't be expected to make an intelligent decision about puberty blockers.

But they can have hormones at 15. And puberty blockers at 11. No, those drugs and hormones are not reversible, and no one knows what their permanent effects might be.

You are a broken record.

Hormones are started before 15. They are usually 2 years after the blockers are given for best results.

Not taking them if the teen is transgendered also has serious affects, but you don't want to admit that. You want to deny that transgendered children and teens exist because you have convinced yourself that it just goes away with time.

Where do you get this idiocy?

Children certainty do understand gender dysphoria, despite what someone has told you or what you want to believe. They might not know the terms but they certainly do know that they were born in the wrong gendered body. Children, tweens and teens who are transgendered know that their biological gender does not match the gender of their psychological gender identity.

How do people discover that they are transgendered before they decide to seek therapy, especially in small towns in rural American? Are there roaming teams of transgendered activists who visit the libraries and clubs and recruit impressionable children to become the next generation of trans activists?

Nope. Full on adult. Sign contracts, ****, die for your country, smoke, drink, and have whatever medical procedures float their boat.

We are not discussing just children here, but minors. Which means all the way up to 18. Unless you think there is some magical switch that the moment they turn 18 they go from incapable of understanding to capable?
