Utah banning ‘conversion therapy’ with Mormon church backing

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah is on its way to becoming the 19th state to ban the discredited practice of conversion therapy in January after state officials formed a proposal that has the support of the influential Church of a Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert announced Tuesday night that church leaders back a regulatory rule his office helped craft after legislative efforts for a ban on the therapy failed earlier this year.

The faith known widely as the Mormon church opposed a previous version of the rule because it wanted assurances that church leaders and members who are therapists would be allowed to provide spiritual counseling for parishioners or families — which were included in the latest conversion therapy ban plan.

In a state where nearly every family has an LGTB member....the church is kinda forced to make concessions in order to keep itself relevant in these ever changing modern times.
 
Just to throw a fly in the ointment, here...but in what way is this truly different than a desire to ban hormone therapy for minors?

Conversion or reparative therapy should be banned nationally because of is both ineffective and dangerous. It is worse than saying Hopes and Prayers because it causes mental health problems. A persons's gender identity or sexual orientation is fixed before birth and cannot be changed, so stop trying. The problem is theistic religious belief, that should be mandated to have a warning label and be prohibited for minors.

Washington, D.C. – In the wake of recent popular entertainment portrayals of conversion therapy, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) today reiterates its long-standing opposition to the practice. APA made clear with its 1998 position statement that “APA opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as “reparative” or “conversion” therapy, that is based on the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or is based on the a priori assumption that the patient should change his or her homosexual orientation.”

APA expanded on that position with a statement in 2013: “The American Psychiatric Association does not believe that same-sex orientation should or needs to be changed, and efforts to do so represent a significant risk of harm by subjecting individuals to forms of treatment which have not been scientifically validated and by undermining self-esteem when sexual orientation fails to change. No credible evidence exists that any mental health intervention can reliably and safely change sexual orientation; nor, from a mental health perspective does sexual orientation need to be changed.”

I will agree with that. I have a friend who was forced to go through it when she was 16. It took her years to get over the suicidal thoughts.

How does transgendered hormone therapy harm people any more than chemo, vaccines, insulin, or antibiotics?

For a minor it could harm development psychologically
 
I've heard gay conversion therapy called 'Pray Away The Gay.' Drive the subject loopy with fear & guilt. That should fix them right up.

I'm am not aware of this happening unless they are misdiagnosed. Any medicine will harm people when they are misdiagnosed.

The religious group that created this nonsense admitted that it was a fraud after the owner came out of the closet himself. He should do 20 years to life in prison for the harm that he caused to others. Hucksters should not be able to hide their fraud behind religious beliefs and walk away when they are exposed as quacks and hucksters.

Exodus International was a non-profit, interdenominational ex-gay Christian umbrella organization connecting organizations that sought to "help people who wished to limit their homosexual desires". It was founded in 1976. Exodus International originally asserted that conversion therapy, the reorientation of same-sex attraction, was possible.[3] In 2006, Exodus International had over 250 local ministries in the United States and Canada and over 150 ministries in 17 other countries.[4] Although Exodus was formally an interdenominational Christian entity, it was most closely associated with Protestant and evangelical denominations.

In 2012, then president Alan Chambers renounced conversion therapy, saying it did not work and was harmful. The following year, Chambers closed the organization and apologized for the "pain and hurt" participants of their programs had experienced.[5] Several other prominent former members, including John Paulk, have made similar apologies. Incongruent gender identity is best treated when the body is still growing and at a time before it has matured in the wrong gender and people have to unlearn wrong gender traits and ideas. I am not saying that there aren't some quacks and frauds out there because there are, but to say that transgendered care can not start until the age of 18 is very wrong and dangerous.

In my opinion the danger of getting it wrong us too great. 18 is soon enough since this is still based largely on a subjective opinion

Children aren't given hormones or other hormone-blocking medication because their natal bodies arent producing hormones or sufficiently developed to use them. The hormones and blockers are administered in low doses after the body begins to produce them naturally at 11-12.

Surgery doesn't happen until they are 17 and usually 18, despite what some media outlets claim

Again this is based on a subjective opinion. The science is too young in this area. 18 is soon enough

18 is too late to start for many people. Many people know that they are transgendered very early in life (under 6 years of age) and they cannot be told to sit down and wait until they are 18 before that situation is treated. The body is already matured and the results aren't as good and there will be depression, anxiety disorders, and suicides if we deny transgendered care until that point.

Delayed and denied care is one of the reasons that suicide is very high in the transgendered demographic.

It is not too.late. in fact it is never too late. They can be supported in many ways until they are 18. But this is all based on a subjective opinion and that opinion should be taken seriously at 18....not before

I am well aware that 18 is not too late but there is no reason to make an adolescent or teen wait until the age of adulthood for the care to start. I'm sure that you have read a few stories in the media about transgendered care that was wrong for a teen but there are many more tens who got the care that they needed and are now productive members of society that happily are who they are and only their closest friends and family know their birth gender is different.
The care needs to be both pragmatic and by a team of experienced Drs and psychologists but the treatments cannot be put on hold until the age of 18 just because there are some cares of misdiagnosed children and teens.

You are entitled to an opinion on this like me but it is nothing more. There is no way to prove gender choice is correct with science currently. Until there is we are simply left with the opinion of a child. I believe they can make that choice as an adult.....not sooner

A person's gender identity can now be imaged with an MRI because there are regions in the brains that have a gender. This is not a choice and it certainly isn't cosmetic. What you are suggesting would be just as horrific as telling a lesbian, bi or gay person that they must be heterosexual until they are 18 when they would be mature enough to make that decision.

Transgender brains are more like their desired gender from an early age -- ScienceDaily

There is absolutely no way to prove gender choice thru an mri. That is a fact. It is certainly appropriate to tell any child they must be abstinent until 18 regardless of sexual orientation. Suggesting that science has resolved this is simply false. Intil.it does all we have are the opinions of a child. While they are important....they do not dictate medical treatment
