what we really are learning from Pete's success.

Why ?

Surely a successful statesman should have more than a "bit" of political or diplomatic knowledge ?
And surely they should should also have experience dealing with the impacts of government regulation and decisions, as well as a better understanding of what decisions business and individuals are having to make.

A presidential candidate needs years of experience working in government.

Knowing how businessmen think is the easy part - I can tell you that and any high up politician will have rubbed shoulers with quite a few businessmen and CEOs over the years.

If it's a complex tax law issue, well that is what advisers and lobbyists are for.
