    Sex and Scatology

We've all heard the line. I heard it from Hemingway. He heard it from someone else. Although I'm afraid it will be nearly unrecognizable for DP's automatic censor, the line goes like this:

"There is nothing so overrated as a bad **** and nothing so underrated as a good ****."

[NB: the first string of asterisks hides the F-word; the second, the vulgar word for defecation.]

I invite comment on the old saying.
Is it true? False? What does it mean? And whatever it means, what is it saying about us?

It is absolutely true that a good, clean, and complete No. 2 is a physiological and psychological blessing.

IMO it means that it's an experience that can, at times, be (practically?) transcendental. Or horrible, I guess.

Are you asking if we think bad sex is overrated and crapping is underrated?

Bad sex is bad sex, so yes, bad sex is overrated. Do I think crapping is underrated? I'd rather not have to do it at all, but I wouldn't say a good crap is under- or over-rated. It's just another thing I have to do to live.

I would agree with the quote in the larger sense. There are a lot of pleasures that can, within the context of time, ultimately not be worth it... and then there are some pleasures that, after experiencing, are forever hanging around in your thoughts.

Also, I always liked Woody Allen's quote on generally the same subject:

"The say sex without love is ultimately an empty experience... but.. as empty experiences go, it's up near the top..."

Hedonism, in its philosophical dimension at any rate, is open to two orders of classification, as represented by the two godfathers of utilitarianism, Bentham and Mill -- respectively, all pleasures differ only in degree or some pleasures are intrinsically better than others.

The old saw cited in the OP contrasts levels of pleasure (bad v. good) in order to compare pleasures (fornication and defecation). Thus, it seems Benthamite in nature.
