Today I stumbled across on YouTube a 200l documentary called "Out of the Closet, Off the Screen."
*****
I would like to share some points that I learned:
1. Williams Haines (1900 - 1973) was the No. 1 American motion picture actor in the 1920s.
2. He also lived openly with a male partner in Hollywood.
a. Their social affairs were attended by the cream of the Hollywood movie industry.
3. With the advent of the Depression, moral crusaders imposed censorship and were determined to drive out all gay actors.
a. Many "confirmed bachelors" immediately got married.
4. Mr. Haines refused to have a sham marriage. His acting career came to an end.
5. Thanks to faithful friends, especially Joan Crawford, he became a successful interior decorator.
6. Shortly after his death, his partner of almost 50 years took a fatal overdose of pills.
