Anthony Venn-Brown was 20 when he endured his first exorcism. It was the beginning of decades of conversion therapy. Now he tells BuzzFeed News how he's taking on the gay "cure" lobby.

The floor of the hall was wooden and shiny, amplifying the footsteps encircling Anthony Venn-Brown. He sat on a chair in the middle of the empty space as the steps moved closer. The pastor and the pastor’s assistant placed their hands on his head and shoulders.

Venn-Brown was desperate for it to work. “I’d been tormented for so long,” he says.

The pastor held a newspaper in front of him; not to read but to collect the bile that he knew would soon be flying out of Venn-Brown’s mouth. As they cast the demon of homosexuality out of the 20-year-old, the pastor also knew it would not be long before the young man started to hyperventilate.

The idea that goblins or unicorns make people homosexual would be funny if these idiots didn't take it seriously.
 
Stuff like this makes me sometimes wish there really was a hell. This kind of minister would be in for quite the surprise upon expiration.

So he counters extremism with his own extremism. As long as it doesn't go beyond olive oil and traditional "laying on of hands" it's nothing more than a religious activity.

I had a really nice female friend like that in college. She made it plain that she didn't want to be a lesbian, but gave up trying to be something else after making a diligent effort. My response was "at least you tried".

He should have stuck with the Anglican Church, the Baptists have ruined a lot of people.

I too think the whole exorcism thing is dumb, but we have to keep in mind that this happened years ago. Of course people from bygone eras would always appear to be more ignorant than we are. Besides, I am sure other groups of people (as in, non-Christians) did some pretty stupid, and sometimes even ghastly, stuff to gays too, so we shouldn't single out the Christians as if they were uniquely abusive.

We're not responsible for what happens in other countries. The issue is what we're willing to tolerate in our own country.

I would argue that the reason WHY she didn't want to be a lesbian is far more concerning than her inability to change her orientation. We may not perform exorcisms any more, but the shame heaped on members of the LGBT community is very real and very destructive. Wouldn't it be far better to live in a world where there was no stigma associated with our sexual orientation or gender identity? What purpose does it serve?
