So I've been reading a lot and listening to a lot of women who are interested in men. If you're a straight woman (or a gay man) do you prefer an alpha male?

You can answer the poll but I would also like you to describe what you view as an alpha male. And if you don't mind describe what you view as a beta or Omega male.

I guess it depends on the definitions. Does beta equal emo?

Alpha/beta is such 4chan BS. Most people move beyond that dichotomy when they graduate high school.

I like guys who are 84% alpha and 16% beta.

Well I really left that up to you. I personally am not a straight lady nor am I seeking a straight lady it's just something I found interesting and I really want to know what you think.

Okay well if you don't mind me asking what traits in a man can bees the man you're with or the ideal would you prefer to be Alpha and which ones would you prefer to be beta?

Gay or straight, emo guys are a real turn-off to me. I don't know how others define "real man," but part of my own definition would be a man who is so confident in his own masculinity that he is never a poseur.

I was graduated from high school some time ago, but I've never moved on.

"I habe"? Were you trying to speak a little German there? :2razz:

Well thanks for your opinion I appreciate you giving your two cents on the subject. But I disagreed. There are absolutely traits about men that in general women find attractive and quite frankly that other men generally appreciate out of men. There are also traits that women generally do not like or find unappealing.

All Alpha and beta and Omega for that matter describe are these traits and the selection of a mate based on them. I would say a big part of it is instinctual.

I like guys who are take charge, confident, honest, don't play games ..... with a little sweet, romantic and a dash of sensitive in there.

I do not like guys who can't make decisions, worry all of the time, too emotional, arrogant, paranoid or have no self-confidence.

It seems like that is the make-or-break for whether or not you're an outfit or not. All other characteristics seem secondary.

But thank you for your list so you like a guy who first off has confidence who is also honest I agree those are two Universal traits that anybody in general likes and even admires about people who possess them. But then you mentioned the sweet romantic and sensitive side.

No clearly you don't like a man whose sensitive about everything I assume or maybe someone who can understand when they're being too sensitive.

So if you don't mind me asking you another question, what do you consider the appropriate amount of sensitivity and romantic flare?

I really don't understand the emo outside of a fashion trend so if you don't mind doing me a little clarification on what you mean?

The whole beta vs alpha viewpoint comes from someone watching animals (gorrillas I think?) and noticing some males were aggressive and seemed to run things while others were submissive to the alpha. He applied this to human social interactions. The fact is, even among Gorrillas the dynamic fluctuates among a group. He was essentially saying some are aggressive and domineering and mates with females and others are beta and submissive to the alpha.

Its taken on a life among some people that either believe they are an alpha make or try and take on the charateristics of what they believe to be an alpha male. In common terminology, people call them douchebags.

I see the alpha male as assertive and genuinely confident and I do respond favorably to that in a guy emotionally, intellectually, and physically. The less assertive, more mild, less confident beta guy probably won't attract me as much initially or generate immediate appreciation. However the less assertive guys--everybody can't be the 'boss' or leader and the chief always needs some indians in the war party--can also be quite intelligent and given of serious integrity, sense of responsibility, and able to get it done when it is necessary that they act. I respect and respond to that too. In fact the latter can often be the most dependable soul mate, companion, protector, provider, lifelong friend, confidante.

In either case, however, I look for necessary consistency in values, compassion, willingness to swim against the tide when it is a bad tide, and the kind of intelligence that permits somebody to be strong, honest, and at the same time respectful.

The arrogant alpha male bully, or the emboldened beta male cowardly bully--that would include women also--who is incapable of making an argument or disagreeing or expressing an opinion or articulating a point of view without putting somebody down, insulting somebody, criticizing somebody, etc. is a huge turn off for me.

Thank you very much. Very in-depth analysis.

In terms of being sensitive, he needs to be the opposite of me. I'm a very emotional person. I cry when you cry - I feel your feelings along with you. I don't know why - that's just how I'm made. He needs to not be that way because there certainly doesn't need to be two very emotional people in a relationship or it just ends up being a depressing sob fest. I'm not sure how to explain what the appropriate amount of sensitivity should be. Emotional when it's "normal" to be, I guess.

Now in terms of being very quick to anger (also emotional), I REALLY dislike guys who get mad quickly.

Romance is a must, of course. I dated a guy once who seemed to be devoid of any romantic gene in his body and that was really boring and a waste of time.

no actually it doesn't it was applied to animals and that includes humans but it's a concept.

No animals like gorillas or Wolves have a different pack mentality than humans do. That's why I'm asking human women how they think and feel rather than asking biologists how they would describe and Alpha squirrel.

He applied this to human social interactions. The fact is, even among Gorrillas the dynamic fluctuates among a group.
this is true but among humans particularly there seems to be a constant now the details may vary and some people may like these traits more than others and vice versa but one trait stands out as significant to an alpha human male and that's confidence. It isn't aggression it isn't dominant or power confidence.

He was essentially saying some are aggressive and domineering and mates with females and others are beta and submissive to the alpha.

As I stated earlier it seems to be the constant among human females that confidence is what makes a human male and Alpha. There are some other secondary traits but that seems to be the primary one. People considered douchebags are typically unappealing hence the name. I think that as a species we are able to tell real confidence from bravado. And that's why certain people get labeled douchebags.

Yeah I agree. If they don't know how to make me feel like a person they enjoy and want to be with and who is worthy of respect, they are totally uninteresting and/or unattractive to me. And when it comes to romance, I expect it to be romantic. But then I am your soul sister in really empathizing with people. I cry at super market openings.

For the most part we are largely on the same page. But I don't even mind a bit of bravado. Sometimes it is born of courage to step forward even when a person is unsure of himself/herself and/or is pushing past fear.

In the movie "Buffalo Girls", Calamity Jane found herself at the scene of Custer's last stand and staring down the barrel of Sitting Bull's rifle. Her Indian friend, "No Ears", steps between her and Sitting Bull and quietly, without comment, stares Sitting Bull down. Sitting Bull pulls the trigger on an empty chamber in his rifle and rides off whooping.

"No Ears" was the quintessential beta male, never intrusive or bragging, just going with the flow, but infinitely wise, honest, caring, on point, and brave when he needed to be. Extremely attractive. :)
