Trying to get some different opinions and arguments on whether or not people think Gender Dysphoria (transgenderism) is a mental illness or not. I'd love to hear what everyone has to think!

Post #1 huh????

Here's an idea, how about you, tell us, what you think.

You go first.

17 years old kid who considered himself to be liberal all throughout high school. Now I'm more conservative but very open minded if well thought through arguments are presented.
Originally from Alberta, Canada. Moved down to the California for college.
Currently working towards a major in psychology, I'd like to major in political science but not a lot you can do with that.

I personally think that it is a mental illness. It seems to me that society is pretending that it is not an issue and saying "If they want to change, let them change!" I personally don't care if a man tries to become a women (or vise versa), be it by hormone adjustments, wearing different clothes, or getting surgery. However I find it deeply troubling that most people don't see that the suicide rate is over 40% for transgender individuals whether the individual makes the change or not. I think this in and of itself proves that people with gender dysphoria need to have psychological help as opposed to just telling them if they change they'll be okay- because, as statistics show, the transition does not help the rate of suicide which should be our society's biggest concern.

Well, the criteria for something being a mental illness is that is causes harm to the self or others, impairs functionality, or unhappiness. So given that dysphoria is right there in the title, yeah, it is.

Transition actually reduces suicide dramatically. But trans people are assaulted, ostracized, or harassed at an astounding rate, so it's hardly surprising their suicide rates are still high.

Their problem is repeated social trauma, not that there's anything inherently wrong with them being trans. And the biggest part of the solution for that is other people learning to leave them the hell alone, not gaslighting their entirely understandable traumatic reactions.

I don't really think so, unless their transgenderism makes them miserable. Just because some wires get crossed, doesn't mean we're mentally ill.

One of my favorite maxims...It is what it is.

First off, you are conflating two things that are not the same. Transgenderism is not Gender Dysphoria. One can be a transgender and no longer have gender dysphoria. The dysphoria is typically what alerts an individual that they are transgendered, but they do not cease to be transgendered once the dysphoria has been resolved. Which, BTW, does not necessarily require going through the full GRS to alleviate.

So now the question is are you asking if the transgenderism is a mental illness, or the dysphoria? Or both as separate things?

Wrong.

Here. Gender Dysphoria: What It Is and How It's Treated

Gender dysphoria used to be called “gender identity disorder.” But the mismatch between body and internal sense of gender is not a mental illness.

http://https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/where-transgender-is-no-longer-a-diagnosis/

Denmark becomes the first country to declassify it as a mental disorder

Whatever the practical effect of Denmark’s move, Edwards-Leeper says, “it is sending the message that an increasing number of people across the globe do not perceive transgender people as ‘crazy,’ but as valuable members of society worthy of respect and human rights like everyone else.”

It's not because they are trans - it's because of how society treats/views trans.

the social rejection and violence that many transgender people experience appears to be the primary source of their mental distress, as opposed to the distress being solely the result of being transgender.

What you don't typically see in a lot of the studies that show high suicide rates among trans is the comparison of trans who have not transitioned with those who have. They try to compare trans with non-trans which does nothing to show whether or not the transitioning, at whatever level, work d on the dysphoria. Additionally, few studies conducted in such a manner have any controls to rule out other high suicide risks, such a chronic depression. There is no reason a person cannot be trans and have depression at the same time.

I don't think it is a mental illness, but transgender people are generally at risk for experiencing trauma over the course of their entire lives. It is really poor taste to call it a mental disorder, because piling on more abuse is not going to help trans men or trans women.

However I don't believe that professors at private universities (or anyone) should be forced to use certain kinds of speech (i.e. pronouns). It would be good etiquette to use they/them pronouns, but I don't believe in strongarming intellectuals with personality/ideology.

Nice first post AJay.

Suicide rate is big evidence, but I don't think it proves all transgender is Dysphoria.

For millions of years individuals have been forced to endure the fruits of their karma in bodies either boy or girl and these messages have been sent along down to us in our DNA along with the individuals and now we have science and society that afford us this luxury.

Mental illness is a designation, you can't call all transgender Dysphoria.

There's no arguments or opinions to be had, what people "think" is irrelevant. It's not mental disorder and that's deemed by the medical community. Anybody else who thinks it is, is simply wrong.

I'm not qualified to diagnose mental illness. I doubt many people here are. If I were transgender I might not appreciate the way the vast majority of people, who don't understand the topic, want to weigh in anyway. That's a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately it has become a political issue but it should never have been.

Well that's what I thought as well at first but you may not understand how high that number really is. As far as I know this is the highest recorded suicide rate within any group of people (that I've found). For example in the Jewish people's suicide rate in Lodtz ghetto was 85 per 100,000 in 1942 compaired to today's transgender rates of around 40,000 per 100,000. So with that being said it's a little silly to think that modern day society is worse to trans people than 1942 Nazi Germany was to the Jewish people.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea it is not a mental disorder. According to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) which was made by the American Psychiatric Association claims that it is.

If this was a response to my post then all I have to say is you're still not qualified to diagnose mental illness.
