HPV Vaccines

Outstanding post, turtledude!

I knew a colleague who had her son vaccinated at 15 but would not have her daughter vaccinated, thinking the fear of HPV would keep her as a chaste Christian virgin.

Yeah, that will work...

recently, there is a TV ad recommending HPV vaccines for teens. Never gave it much thought though one of my friends-a pharmacist, and mother of two now 20 something girls, noted she was having her daughters vaccinated when they were first hitting puberty years ago. My now college freshman son-his pediatrician, my wife's best friend, suggested he get the vaccine as well, which he did. Again, never gave it much thought until my son told me one of his best friends, now a year or two older, was just told by the oncologist that he had probably less than a year to live due to an invasive and aggressive form of anal cancer caused by HPV. Now I am paying attention and thinking how things would be so much different if this young man had received the vaccine a few years ago.

So my suggestion is if you have teen age kids, get the vaccine. the down side is way way too high

Yup. I've already got my HPV vaccine.

Thankfully, my parents aren't the 'vaccines cause diseases' types.

That's bull****.

If its such a help why do they need to advertise? I saw the ad last night and it had me thinking that. If it works so well why would they be advertising, wouldnt the doctor just tell kids they need it like TB, tetanus, ect. None of those need million dollar ad campaigns

Because there are so many anti-vaccine idiots walking around these days that don't trust their doctor.

Our kids got the vaccine. It is literally a vaccine against cancer.

First introduced nearly 40 years ago in 1978

So far I've gotten my daughters all of the vaccinations recommended by their pediatrician, on the schedule recommended by their pediatrician. I intend to continue doing this in the future. I'd be a pretty ****ty parent if I refused to get them a vaccine which could save their lives because I'm uncomfortable with the idea of them having sex.

HPV Vaccines

assuming that i have children, they will be getting this vaccine. prevalence of the virus is fairly high among sexually active people, and it's likely that the kid will grow up and have sex eventually.

Whack a mole HPV vaccine mandate.......

:doh

My sister had cervical cancer several times and had to get her womb removed to stop her from getting cervical cancer anymore.

If taking a vaccine can significantly diminish the chance of getting cervical cancer, do it. It is no joke.

sounds like an even better reason to vaccinate your kids

just something to point out.. you have hpv. in all likelihood.. just about 100% of sexually active adults will contract hpv..

In fact, most sexually active men and women will have at least one HPV infection at some point in their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Any person who is sexually active can contract HPV, even if you’ve only had one sexual partner.

Honestly.. its pretty cruel and unethical for a medical provider to tell someone.. well they would have lived if they had only had the vaccine for hpv.

Agreed, theres probably a good reason to do so. The ad just rubbed me the wrong way, like it was a scam.

Viagra must not work either. Do you apply this criticism to every single pharmaceutical product that has ever been advertised? Tylenol doesn't work either, eh?

Your comment reminds me of an ex-coworker. He hated big phrama and thought the medical field was a scam. He started feeling bad,..had to be FORCED to get to the doctor, and he had a tumor in his lungs the size of his heart. Two weeks after diagnosis, he was dead.

He should.

Its interesting to me that the same people that will willing accept that all vaccines are safe and doctors wouldn't administer them if they were not needed and safe...

That these same people often criticize the doctors for prescribing opioids, for prescribing unneeded treatments, and big pharma for gouging prices.

A healthy dose of skepticism is very important when it comes to medicine.

Yeah pretty much. have you been in a coma for the past 10 years? Every other commercial is a new drug to fix some minor problem with a mile long list of side effects that are much worse than the original problem

Alright buddy. Don't take Tylenol then.

It is funny, I worked with a bunch of nurses that refused to get flu vaccines. They all blathered on about all these side effects and how they got the flu from the vaccine. I buy that reactions happen, but not with such frequency. Then all of a sudden, there is a requirement that all staff in hopsitals that that have direct patient contact WEAR A MASK for the entire flu season (could be 4-5 months). Each and every one of them got the vaccine entirely without incident.:lamo

Yeah.. not sure what you are saying about wearing a mask for the entire flu season and how it relates to the vaccine.

This was about "vaccine anxiety" in general. I was relating a story about flu vaccine. Once hospital personnel found out they had to wear a mask to prevent transmission of flu (since they were unvaccinated) they magically became ok and non reactive to the vaccine. Apparently not wearing a mask for 4 or 5 months at work was more important than keeping up an illusion of having had severe reactions to the vaccine.:lamo

I get people have issues with vaccines and need to do what is best for their own body, but I hope their actions are based on reality and actual science.

A vaccinated person can still transmit the flu. It gives them immunity to the virus.. but they can still transmit virus in water droplets, etc from one patient to the next. So that's why the mask prohibition made no sense ) . Unless it was really a ploy by management to encourage vaccination.

If a person is vaccinated for the flu, they are much less likely to get the strains of flu in the vaccine. If a healthcare worker does not get vaccinated, given that he/she is working with higher risk populations...the chance of being exposed to flu is much greater. In turn. the healthcare worker also works with many people that are at great risk for flu.

I completely support the policy.

But realistically, we now have a close to 100percent vaccination rate.

I will completely acknowledge that it doesn't completely remove possibility of transmission, it sure as hell got the vaccination rate up. Threat of mask was more effective than pleading with them from scientific terms.:lamo

People call minor viruses "flu" but in reality if you have flu it frequently is pretty rough stuff and in a debilitated population -deadly. A partially preventable life sucking resource sucking disease.

Honestly.. it doesn;t make that much sense from a scientific standpoint.

1. Yes.. you are less likely to get the strain of the flu that is in the vaccine. However, there are tons of viruses that cause flu that are not covered in the vaccine and they change quite frequently. in an immune suppressed group these viruses can be deadly.

2. If a healthcare worker gets the vaccine.. he is not at risk.. but his patients are still at risk for transmission from him. First they can get all the other strains that are not covered. Second, he is not susceptible to the virus. but that does not mean that he cannot transmit virus from one patient to another or pick it up from say a visitor and pass it to a patient. .

3. Because of the above.. if a patient is that immunosuppressed that caregivers need to be vaccinated.. then a mask and precautions should be taken regardless of vaccination because the caregiver could pass all sorts of virus that are not covered by the vaccine.

In other words this policy is detrimental to patient health by perpetuating the erroneous belief that vaccination is a substitute for precautions like masks, gloves, etc. When it most certainly is not. "why didn''t you wear a mask?"... cuz I am vaccinated.
