This article will show you the disturbing fact about child marriage....it's happening in the USA
http://motto.time.com/4807611/us-child-marriage-survivor-story/

This article describes a story about a 15 year old girl who was forced by her parents to marry a 28 year old stranger whom she just met. This didn't happen in Yemen or Niger or even India but in California.

For those who think that requiring parental consent and judiciary approval keeps underaged girls from marrying willy nilly, well, the article has this to say about it:

in many cases, the parents are driving the match, and a judge will often defer to the wishes of the parents.

Meanwhile, Texas finally got around to limiting child marriage to those with emancipation

There is also a study on the effects of child marriage:

I'm not going to condone arranged marriages nor will I pretend to understand the cultures that still arrange marriages. However, I do know several ladies from Egypt who had arranged marriages .....were quite happy and still married after 30+ years.

There will always be those exceptions of "It worked for me", however that doesn't remove the underlying principle that denying anybody freedom of choice is wrong.

Contrast your Egyptian womens' experiences with the millions of victims of forced marriage who may have been lesbian, or who may have been stuck with at best somebody they found sexually unnattractive or at worst a repulsive brute who abused them. 30 years of yuck with somebody you don't care for? Not for me, and I would suspect not for 99.9% of women with a truly free choice.

Texas, the state with the country’s second-highest child marriage rate, finally bans it.

The article you cited was about an illegal marriage. Not really pertinent to the claim that legal safeguards are insufficient.

Also, general comment not necessarily relevant to the specific case cited, but arranged=/=forced. It's been the norm in many times and places.

Marriage is essentially a property arrangement, is it not? The child bride is the property in this case. :(
