[FONT=&quot]The figures from Public Health England show 5,920 syphilis diagnoses in 2016 - a rise of 12 per cent in one year, and a near doubling from 3,001 cases in 2012.

I don't get hook up culture, "safe sex" is russian roulette with your junk... I don't get people. A long term, monogamous relationship is the best, safest course of action when getting sexually involved with anyone.

I certainly agree that a long term monogamous relationship is best. And the sex tends to be better too, since you learn what makes each other tick.

But guess how I met my special someone. By playing the field. :) But if you do that you HAVE to use condoms and there are way too many people out there not doing that.

I am reminded of a scene from Men of Honor, in which Robert Dinero informs his divers that while a one night stand only lasts one night, syphilis lasts a lifetime!

First of all, what if your wife has an STD? Second of all, that's the secondary reason for condoms. Third of all, absitinence education has not shown an effect of working.

No wonder, a quick search shows many states get special federal funds to teach abstinence only programs.

These kids are not getting a proper sexual education. Yes, we want to believe they are not going to hide under the bleachers and get it on or go clubbing and **** in the bathroom but the reality is, they are. The best way to fight these diseases is better education on them.

Only 22 states and the District of Columbia require that sexual education be taught in schools, while 33 states mandate HIV education curriculums. Yet only 13 states require that HIV and sexual education be medically accurate.

One of the 37 states that doesn’t specify medical accuracy is Mississippi.

The teen birth rate there is 42.6 per 1,000 girls — roughly double the national rate. Further, contraception education and information on sexually transmitted illnesses may only be taught with direct permission from the state Board of Education.

Contrast that with New Jersey, where the teen birth rate is 14.8 per 1,000 girls: sex education and HIV education are mandated and must be medically accurate.

Perhaps nowhere are the rules more intricate than in Tennessee, where sex education and teen pregnancy are actually wed when it comes to the law: Sex education is only required to be taught in counties where the teen pregnancy rate is higher than 19.5 per 1,000 female students age 15-17.

Blaming abstinence only is absurd. This article was for the UK people. Not the US. And in the UK:

My bad however I still stand by more education. As you see in the article you linked, this was only made compulsory in March 2017 and called the old guidance outdated. So this is better education to help reduce their rates.

In an interview with the BBC, Ms Greening said: "At the moment, many schools teach sex and relationships education.
"But it's not mandatory, and, therefore, for many children, they are not coming out of our schools really being equipped to deal with the modern world or indeed be safe and protected from some of the very modern challenges that young people face on cyberbullying and sexting.
"What we're introducing today is mandatory relationships and sex education in all secondary schools, but also mandatory relationships education in primary schools as well.

Izzi Seccombe, chairman of the association's community wellbeing board, said: "The lack of compulsory SRE in secondary academies and free schools is storing up problems for later on in life, creating a ticking sexual health time bomb, as we are seeing in those who have recently left school.

I'd say that the culture of "do as you feel" has a far greater damaging impact on STD and behavioral rates.

That's true, I can't deny that plays a role as well but I am not sure if it has a greater damage. Maybe it's because to me it seems weird to go to an app, find someone I think is "hot", and then just meet up with them for sex. Not only having sex with a stranger but not trying to do it as safely as possible considering you have no idea where the other's person stuff has been.

Sleeping with an infected person, no matter how "safe" you are is about the stupidest thing one can do IMHO.

And, part of the counter of the 'do as you feel' sub culture is accurate information about consequences, and how to avoid them.

It's doing such a swell job too.

Plot twist/hot take: The rise is contributed to by horny divorced baby boomers far more than millennials.

I agree that the detached sex that some people are into definitely presents very real health risks. However, since people who are into the whole "hook up culture" likely aren't going to change, ensuring that people are educated on the importance of wearing condoms is important.

I mean it's really just conjecture but Millennials are having less sex than prior generations, they're more likely to use condoms, and their number of sexual partners is down from prior generations.

Meanwhile, boomers have actually got on board with things like online dating. And now you have a whole load of divorced/widowed retirees - it's not as if they have any incentive to use condoms, so they just bone and bone and bone and end up spreading syphilis (which they've had a longer time to contract - they're old) amongst each other.

I don't have proof, it's just a wild theory, but the axioms of my theory are there, and whilst it might be a stretch to say that older generations are causing the majority of this to happen, it woudln't surprise me one bit if the split young/old is more weighted to the old than one might initially think.

The article is discussing the UK.

Got to wonder how much of this is due to antibiotics becoming less effective, not to mention there being more people in general. Statistically, this generation is actually slightly less promiscuous than the last.
