Indian minister offers new brides a bat to beat husbands.

Gopal Bhargava, a state minister in India's Madhya Pradesh, gave 10,000 wooden bats to newlyweds and their family members at a mass wedding ceremony for poor women in Garhakota district on Sunday.

Alcoholism, he says, is a serious issue for the women in his district. "When I go to the village all the women tell me to ban liquor," he told CNN. Their husbands often spend all their earnings on drink, he said, leaving little for the household.

The bat has inscriptions on both sides, loosely translated as, "This bat is given to reform the alcoholics," and "police will not say anything," on the other.

Would be interesting if any wives would use them and how their husbands would be reformed.

More likely then not this initiative will result both in domestic violence against husbands and disproportional response against their wives. Indian Police arrest much fewer people then US police.

This minister Bhargava is a BJP member (conservative). Additionally to contextualize the "mass marriage" part of the article, which would seem weird to us Westerners, these are likely all arranged marriages.

So said another way, "Let's give wooden bats to women to fend off the alcoholics with whom they are being forced into marriage."

According to "Disposal of Persons Arrested Committing Crimes Against Women by Courts During 2015", there have been 113,403 complaints of Domestic Violence in 2015 and 14,019 men were convicted of abusing their wives in that year in India. So some of the husbands who will retaliate dis-proportionally will be arrested and convicted. But not most -- India is not USA.

It's gonna happen, they got bats and were told to make use of 'em. The only question now is: how many girlie men will be unable to handle the situation? And if they can't, who's to blame except them?

More likely then not, most men will defend themselves. Some will probably use disproportionate force.

In USA, it is much easier for a woman to abuse a man. If he defends himself he will likely get a conviction. In India getting a man arrested and convicted is harder.
