Defiant Girl

So anyway, the bull is meant to speak towards strong bull markets and the girl is meant to speak towards equality of women, right?

Kind of missing the connection there. Bull markets aren't dependent on equality of women. In fact, before WWII there was plenty of bull markets. Just sayin'.

Honestly, the whole thing makes it look like the girl is trying to defeat the bull market. :/

Fearless Girl statue creation of Lewes sculptor

"The once male dominated environment of Wall Street needs to recognize the strength in women – and her place within the financial community," Visbal wrote in a press release. “All women should relate to this work. It should inspire the young to dream as if anything were possible and simultaneously encourage today’s working woman to hold her ground, no matter what challenges may come barreling down the pike. ... This is a piece of work all women of any age, shape, color or creed can relate to, a work which reminds us today’s working woman is here to stay and has taken her place in the nation’s financial district."

Says it all quite nicely.

Also - fear not weaklings....

Fearless Girl will be on display for one year in New York City.

The bull is representative of a thriving market.
Obviously, the little girl doesn't like that too much.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting from it too. Apparently the girl wants a bear market instead. lol

What's "PC" about the idea that:

#1) women matter
#2) women are important

Those really mean the same thing. And I don't think that most decent people view women as lesser or anything.

#3) everything being owned/run only by white men isn't the smartest path forward

Uh, who exactly is pushing this narrative?

#4) it's wrong to ignore a significant part of the population

Women aren't being ignored, not in this day and age. The fact that International Women's Day was blowing up pretty much everywhere yesterday, clearly shows that's not the case.

Don't society already tell women they can be anything they want? Do we really need another statue to say that to little girls at this point? Also, I still prefer traditional women and apparently so do most men. Just sayin'. Fight the power, but it's not working. You give me a choice between a woman like this and a traditional woman and the traditional woman wins every single time.

I don't think it was well thought out.
Maybe her riding the bull or something like that, I don't know.

Yeah, a statue where the girl is working with the bull instead of opposed to it in battle would be better.

We raised our girls to be strong and self-sufficient. I have no problem with it.

I'd feel better if there were a little boy holding her hand.

What can't she hold the little boy's hand ...

uhm.... True art doesn't need to be explained in writing at the exhibit.

You have no idea what you are talking about (as usual).
Even your use of a term like "true art" betrays a grade-school level of understanding of the concept.

uhm.... True art doesn't need to be explained in writing at the exhibit.

On the contrary, much art needs to be explained. Classes in art colleges even offer degrees in understanding art.

The exhibit is a work of art, and IMO a fairly good one. It also is intended to send a message. That's permitted in the arts world.

IMO it does its job.

I think in an effort to be "diverse," they missed the point of the bull.
It's kind of like a good luck "charm" or "blessing" for WallStreet.

It's just really stupid to force this stuff, most of it ends up being cringey and/or easy to mock.

It's actually crap.

1. The bull was put there to speak towards bull markets.
2. The girl is standing as if she is standing in opposition to the bull, which again stands for bull markets.
3. It completely ignores the fact that bulls charge and kill people that stand in opposition to them.

If you like dead little girls and bear markets it might be a good piece of art, but otherwise it's crap.

Here's the perfect interpretation for the literalist... and others incapable of abstract/symbolist thought and analysis.

There is nothing abstract there. She is standing in opposition to the bull, which represents a strong market. If you want women in more positions or whatever then make a piece of art with a girl working with a bull, not in opposition to a bull.

Simply because things have improved some over the last few decades doesn't mean everything is peachy.

I refer you back to the basic statistics of the Fortune 500 boards and CEO's I posted earlier.

By the way - I doubt your term "blow up" is all that true.
I don't know one single woman who changed their schedule yesterday.
It's was more of a non-event from what I've seen.
Nowhere near the energy or press that the big march right after Trump's inauguration created. (not that I agreed with that march)

What would be an acceptable ratio of female v. male CEO's? Does the ratio have to match the ratio of men and women in society?

Lets all just be grateful that its a statue of a little girl and a bull. Cuz...in the real world...we are gonna need a new little girl.

Good art is in the eyes of the beholder.

Whether or not you like the message, the message is clear.

No it is not.

Which? Or both?

I made no comment on whether or not I agree with the message. Just that it's clear.

That the message is clear. The girl is standing in opposition to the bull. Making the piece into a battle between a girl and a bull is the wrong message to send.
