I mean, come on people.

A vulnerable woman, who is powerless to leave the situation, is at times held down against her will, has strangers looking & touching at private parts of her body, perhaps without appropriate measures being taken to acknowledge her ownership of her body or to preserve her comfort levels. Perhaps she has fingers or instruments inserted without her consent, and sometimes against her consent, invading and crossing decent boundaries. She is fearful of what is happening to her and perhaps for the wellbeing of her baby, and receives no reassurance that either she or her child are ok. That is a violation, no matter how you look at it. Even IF this treatment is given with no malice and the intent of attempting to assist her with birthing her child, there is NEVER a reason to forgo common decencies that will enable her to maintain a role in the birth, some autonomy over her body, to be involved in the decision-making, to be informed about what they want to do BEFORE they do it.

What Is "Birth Rape"? :doh

^Of course, it's Jezebel. It's this kind of **** that makes feminism a laughing stock and does more harm than good. Also, by watering down the term 'rape' they insult true rape victims. I suppose anyone who has had a catheter inserted while unconscious is a 'rape victim.'

I don't agree with this notion of birth rape. I understand there are valid complaints about some medical staff's actions during a childbirth and of course a doctor should always ask for consent and advise you of what is happening, but if you are in labor and seeking medical attention, well that's going to involve your vagina. It does insult true rape victims.

I agree, doctors should also be mindful and sensitive to the well-being of the mother. Unfortunately, sites like Jezebel need to sensationalize the issue and turn it into something it isn't.

Having people hold you down and mutilate your genitals merely for profit or expediency reasons is very rape-y to my mind, and is something that millions of women have been experiencing for decades. I'm perfectly happy to share the term rape with these women. What they go through is horrific. Sadly, it was even worse in previous decades.

If anyone is actually curious about this, there was a reasonably productive thread about it a year or two ago that wasn't started in such bad faith as this one.

Agree on all points.

To call delivering a baby "birth rape" is to trivialize the real thing.

At BEST, this article may call to readers' attention extremely poor bedside manner. Doctors SHOULD carry on as much dialogue is appropriate to help a frightened mom during this scary procedure. A step-by-step banter combined with encouraging words would, I think, be worth its weight in gold . . . most especially to a first-time mom.

Frankly, it's very difficult to believe most physicians DON'T treat their patients in such a manner. The OP example of some loony-tune physician discussing another patient on his phone in the delivery room describes an idiot, not a doctor.

To paint all doctors with this brush is sensational journalism. Color me surprised.

Can they call it something other than birth rape? The term birth rape makes it sound like the kid is being raped, not the mother. :/

I hesitate to even call this journalism. This is just total nonsense.

To paint feminism with this nonsense is just well, nonsense.

Except feminists support it, so...

Correction. You got some journalists yanking chains to get money supporting it.

Smoke supports it and is a feminist.

While that is true (and I urge others to read that thread), I am one feminist of one school of thought out of millions and dozens, respectively.

Women are not simply carbon copies of each other. Learn how to address us as humans rather than robots and perhaps you won't have so many problems with us.

Since there are viable alternatives you've presumably freely chosen to accept the mutilation - I assume you mean an episiotomy - and all the other activities that accompany a hospital childbirth.

The entire point is that doctors often deny women those choices even in the absence of medical need, either by force or by simply not even telling then what they're planning to do. Try reading it.

It's a common held belief from what I can tell in the feminist movement. I could of course be wrong on that of course.

Btw, don't you think the name should be something along the lines of childbirth rape instead of birth rape?

Every damn thing is "rape" these days.

It is an insult to those who have actually suffered the crime.

Feminists have all sorts of dumb beliefs. Here is just a few:

flirting is harassment
flirting is rape
manspreading is sexist
saying hi is harassment
opening doors for a woman is sexist
pregnant celebrities are sexist
Having to pay for a tampon is sexist
Any word with the word man in it is sexist
The word ladies is sexist
Shirts with the word Trophy on them are sexist
The word cupcake is sexist
Mentioning that a woman is a loving mother is sexist
Interrupting a woman is sexist
Correcting a woman is sexist
Putting your arm around your girlfriend is sexist
The word sweetheart is sexist
The word cute is sexist
The word hot is sexist
Asking a woman to marry you is sexist

Yeah...

I don't have time - unfortunately - to read it now. I'd only point out that the same complaint can be made about any virtually any hospital stay for any procedure not just child birth. Are we to term those rape as well?

It's stupid to call things rape when they aren't rape. It makes the word rape meaningless.

That being said, I think when possible, doctors should taking the time to explain options and seek consent before performing medical procedures during delivery. The operative phrase there being "when possible". I wonder how much of the treatment being complained about is happening in a crisis situation where there isn't time to explain what's going on and seek consent for every little thing.

Indeed. I never even knew this stupid "Jezebel" blog existed, until a male poster at DP linked to it and called it the voice of feminism!

Feminism is a label. A label that means something. Currently the biggest representation of feminism was the ass clowns dressing up like Vaginas and promoting islamic subjugation of women as liberty.

You chose the label. If I Google feminism I see Anita sarckizian and Lacy green bitching about the world's dumbest ****. That's what it is. Perhaps you should choose a different label if you don't want to be lumped into a group of idiots crying about manspreading and micro aggressions.

Feminism or rather the majority of people that claim it have painted it this way. From the feminist march heralding islam as a bastion of equality of sexes (I must stifle my laugher) to Anita Sarkisian botching about video game characters, they have painted feminism this way. This nonsense is deranged. So blame the counter culture of feminism for its image.

Really, when you walk down the street dressed up like female genitalia moaning about period woahs, you've made yourself into a laughing stock. That's the way it is.
