Hilary Duff Defends Kissing Young Son on Lips, Shuts Down Mom-Shamers

Saw this and thought it would make for some some interesting debate and discussion.

Personally, all my kids, all their lives, kiss me on the lips. Naturally we are not talking any kind of deep kissing like I do with my wives. My son and step son have gone away from a few years ago, about when they were hitting their teen years. And I will be quite honest, I don't remember when I stopped doing it with my parents when I was growing up, or if I ever did, but I know it is something we do now. I couldn't even tell you when it started, just noticed one day we were doing so.

A kiss, like many other actions, can have a variety of meanings, contextually based. Holding hands can be a sign of deep friendship, family love, or sexual love. Yeah, if you are battling tounges, there is something sexual going on, but that is only one specific type of kiss. To classify all kisses as sexual, is ignorant, shallow and stupid.

I never did it with my parents and don't with my children. I don't find it offensive though or assume it's automatically sexual.

You do with your wives, do you.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Why would anyone think there was?

My mother and I kissed on the mouth all our lives. My father and I also did until I became embarrassed by it in grade school; we resumed when seeing each other after separations some time after I moved away from home.

In both cases it was an wholesome, innocent expression of love, and I agree with Hillary duff that objection is warped.

Anyone who knows anything about JFK knows that he All Man, and a 1000% ladies man. Perhaps less well known is that his father Joe was too. As one of the richest people in the country Joe Kennedy dabbled in the movie business, and with Hollywood actresses, such as Gloria Swanson, who he is known to have had an affair with.

I have read that while Joe Kennedy was Ambassador to England he once, while back in the US, gave a speech at a college. His sons Joseph Jr. and John, then college students who the father had not seen for a while, were in the audience. The two sons went to the dias before the speech, and kissed their father on the lips in from of the of the large audience. Our culture should embrace unselfcounscious displays of affection like that.

Well said.

People have gone stupid.
that pretty much is all that is needed.

Gone stupid how? By kissing on the lips or having issues with kissing on the lips?

taking an innocent kiss from their child as some sort of bad behavior.
people have become morons. this is what happens when society throws reason and logic out for emotional responses to everything.

I still kiss my 7-year old son on the lips but not my 11-year old son. I could tell when he was no longer comfortable with it so now I just kiss him on the top of his head. But never when his friends are around. :)

First girl or person to kiss me on the lips was my older cousin. I didn't volunteer.

Guess I believe kissing on the lips should be saved for your spouse or girlfriend.

And just to be clear, you are including adult children in that correct?

yes I do. there is a difference between a kiss from a kid that loves their parents and the way I kiss my wife.
depends on the relationship. now I am not going to go up when they are 18 and do it.
mine aren't that old yet.

Russians do that

Oh just get over it and mind your own business.

Bunch of prudes up in here.

 not for me at all especially past a certain age but I couldn't care less what others do. In general with the way they express their innocent, agreed on and comfortable show of affection is their choice to make and I would never shame anybody for mouth kissing..

I have always kissed my grandparents, sister, mother on the lips, that was totally platonic and a sign of love, nothing more and nothing less.

intent is everything, how can another judge a kiss?

really though, if we want to get technical the reason not to lip kiss kids:
HSV-1 and HSV-2 are transmitted through direct contact, including kissing, sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal sex), or skin-to-skin contact. Genital herpes can be transmitted with or without the presence of sores or other symptoms

Given your quote, HSV-1 and 2 can be transmitted via hugs and even handshakes. Somehow, I don't think that will limit teaching our kids basic courtesies of displays love. By your technicality, we don't even want to change our kids diapers or clothes without gloves.

wrong again...it usually is when you respond to me but...it's Christmas so go for it
if that is how you interpret that, then go with it

technically that is not correct but if that keeps you happy....:peace

Hey you wrote skin to skin. If a handshake isn't considered skin to skin, I don't know what would be. And most, although I will admit not all, hugs will usually involve skin contact.

Also just noticed that I had posted:

...basic courtesies of displays love.

That should have read:

...basic courtesies or displays of love.

Not sure if that changes your response.

The problem is that "society" TODAY takes no issue with anal and oral sex as a bases for marriage and then takes issue with anything that is innocent. The bad is elevated to good and good is being slandered or at least taking a back seat.
