I would think that my wife and sons would have a better use of 20 grand than having my headstone to look at. Wouldn't it make much more sense to scatter my ashes and just have a virtual grave to look at at findagrave.com ?

Cheaper option donate the body to science,

No funeral costs, no cremation costs. Saving at least $1000,

I know this is going to seem bizarre but a lot of people are becoming 'eternal' reefs after cremation.

how it grows in 5 years

Economically I suppose. Some people who do not care what you do with their body still think what they do with mom and pop's bodies matters a great deal. Even cremation with a funeral home viewing and service can run you close to what the funeral home part of the traditional burial costs.

The funeral business is as corrupt as they get. They will tell you that "law" says you must do this or that. An old friend died in an accident in Montana and his wife fought the "law" at every turn. She saved a bundle. She hauled the body in the family mini-van using a home made box to get it home. No casket required for burial. Her church did services for free. I forget all the details, but you get the idea.

Logistically not everyone can have a tombstone. We don't have enough cemeteries and space. It is kind of like when a sports team keeps retiring numbers. I mean, like the Yankees. They have retired so many numbers, at some point they are going to have to go into triple digits, right???
