Another member just posted that he is off opioids and on the mend, and that made me wonder how many here have had experience with the stuff. I have had quite a few surgeries and have had a few rounds of either one or several of (list copied and pasted because I'm lazy)

  • Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Hycodan)
  • Morphine (MS Contin, Kadian)
  • Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percoset)
  • Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
  • Fentanyl (Duragesic)

Given how many people have become addicted, I thank the good Lord(some call it luck) for not being one of them.

You are very lucky, and hopefully had responsible health care. I got my wisdom teeth taken out and was given a script for enough Percs to last me two months. I think I took three, and flushed the rest. In retrospect, I could have made a nice little chunk selling them...hehe...which I wouldn't do, of course! But how easy would it have been?

My mother had her knee replaced last year, and she was on everything, and for a good chunk of time - complications meant the pain lasted longer than they expected. She didn't get hooked, but the weening off process took a while, and was uncomfortable. I can understand why people less motivated / mentally strong fall victim. I know for a fact I'd be one of those, which is why I refuse to take them for anything that something else would help (a big reason why I never tried coke either...haha). Thankfully I've never needed them for anything long term...despite repeatedly being given scripts that could have got me in trouble if I decided I liked the pills, and wanted to take all I was given.

There, but for the grace of God, go I, and all of that...

Yeah, I remember back in the day they also gave out Codeine like candy after dental procedures. We're so lucky.

When I was in the Military I had my wisdom teeth pulled, and they gave me vicodin which made me nervous at first because all my buddies told me crazy stories about when they were on vicodin. So I said to hell with it and took 1 or 2 vicodin (can't remember) and I really didn't see why they were such a big deal. I guess maybe I was just lucky, but vicodin didn't really hit me hard. I ended up not needing very many of them and I just through away the rest.

I remember getting a wisdom tooth out. I forget exactly what the dentist game me but I called complaining about the pain. He said double the dose. It worked. This was like 30 years ago.
