… Microsoft uses it to control my system. (Just bitching).

I posted in another thread about having to delete cookies to get free views on NYT and WaPo pay sites. So I am Chatting openly with Brothern. Posting here not to derail that thread. :)

If you have Firefox or Chrome, you are able to search for and delete the individuals cookies for WaPo and NYT.

and Calamity.

You can also just access it via another browser.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately I have the Windows 10 Upgrade, and "Microsoft Edge." Microsoft keeps updating monthly, and every time I try to get rid of things like Cortana, the Cloud, etc., they just upload them all again.

Last time I even had a Microsoft Tech do it...all back again.

I just built a new PC from scratch....first time I ever paid for an operating system....LOL, usually it was bootleg. I bought Windows 10 on a USB, great way to install.

W10 would be the best OS ever if not for all the automatically attatched bull**** that comes with every single goddamned update.

Functionally speaking, it’s miles better than Vista or 8.

I used to have problems accessing paywall sites, but no more. Thanks to a tip from another member those days of complaining to people who post WaPo and NYT links is gone.

If you regularly use Edge, this method won't work for you, but if you use Chrome, Firefox or Opera this makes it easy to bypass those paywalls. It even works in "incognito" browsing mode (after tweaking the proper settings).

Take a look at this website: https://add0n.com/javascript-toggler.html

What this extension does is turn off JavaScript and turn it back on...at your command. So...before clicking on a WaPo link, I'll turn off JS and then I can read the article. It works.

Now, there are other extensions that do the same thing for all of those browsers (except Edge). Check them out...see if they'll do the job.

There are a lot of reasons I don't use Edge very much...and their lack of a JS toggle extension is one of them. Extensions for Edge are tightly controlled by MS through their app store. shrug... That's the way they like it.

Regarding your Win10 updating woes, I don't know what to tell you. I don't have the same problems. I haven't tried to "get rid" of Cortana or the Cloud. I just basically don't use them. I never see them. I have them turned off in the settings. When I apply Win10 updates, I never see them turned back on. It just doesn't happen to me.

I’m using Win 10. I’ve had no problem disabling Cortana and just not using IE or Edge.

No they dont :)

And?

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

https://www.google.com/chrome/

Download and install.

Then go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Web Browser and choose which one you want to have as default.

Last time I even had a Microsoft Tech do it...all back again.

Yes, every 6 months there is a major update and Microsoft resets the default apps for some annoying reason.. but does not mean that other browsers are gone. Just do the settings change above and all is back to normal.

As for Cortana.. dont have to use it, and you can disable it.. in fact YOU enabled it in the first place :).. but yea Microsoft most likely tricked you (and many others) with techy speak. But to stop her, Settings > Cortana and turn everything off. On the task bar (black bar at the bottom) right click it and goto Cortana and choose what you want.. hidden for example.

Now clearing cookies. In Edge you can do that as well.. just saying. It will clear them all but it will get rid of them.

It should be Microsoft "On Edge". There comes a tipping point where the required stubbornness needed for one of the Linux flavors such as Ubuntu or Fedora is less than the abuse you get from Windows. Right now, I would say it's on a knife's "Edge".
